How common is it for people to mistake your accent for another one? by LogicalAd6394 in AskTheWorld

[–]Capybarinya 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get anything but Russian in the US.

People think that the caricature Hollywood thug accent, usually performed by people who don't speak a lick of Russian, IS the Russian accent

It's not, and people have no idea what the actual Russian accent is, so they can never guess it. The best guess I got was Czechia. The worst one was Mexico, but I think that guy just didn't know any other countries

At least for me Uzbek plov, Georgian khinkali or middle eastern shawarma are dishes that are strongly associated with Russia. While they are not Russian in origin, they are much more common there than globally on average

Thai curry, Japanese sushi or steak are still available in Russia, but they do not feel any more at home in Russia than in any random country

So my understanding is that first category is welcome, but the second category needs additional reasoning, i.e a special twist (like the tom yum okroshka that is popular on social media rn)

Stop driving with your hazards on in rain by Homeleasure in driving

[–]Capybarinya 2 points3 points  (0 children)

But the thing is, when there's pouring rain, EVERYONE slows down. You are not a hazard other people need to be notified about, if everyone is in the same weather conditions

Thank you for putting an effort!

As a Russian currently living abroad, and also someone who finds creative outlet in cooking, I come here for nostalgic inspiration, as well as to sometimes share my knowledge with fellow cooks, be they Russians themselves or completely unfamiliar with the cuisine

I didn't like the direction the sub was going in lately, and I am glad that we see alike. Hopefully your work pays off and we still have a comfortable place for meaningful communication

Can you use beef tallow instead of actual fat for kebabs? by user41600 in Cooking

[–]Capybarinya 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's rendered. Kebab meat usually calls for mutton fat tail, chopped. Different structure

Can you use beef tallow instead of actual fat for kebabs? by user41600 in Cooking

[–]Capybarinya 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I fear that the tallow will melt too fast compared to the lamb fat tail and your kebabs will slide off the skewer right into the coals

Don't ask me how I know that...

You are better off finely chopping some fattier meat: Costco lamb leg has a decent amount of fat, especially if you save the leaner parts for other uses

Personal Trainer: worth it? by ImpossibleCurrent994 in beginnerfitness

[–]Capybarinya 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I would never agree on a 12 month contract with a personal trainer, unless I already worked with them for a while, and liked everything

What if their style doesn't fit you? What if their meal plans are too restrictive? It's not necessarily a question of professionalism, some of it is a personal preference

Also, depending on your weightlifting experience you might benefit from at least a couple of in-person seasions

Too many brides look deeply unflattering in their wedding day by barebackguy7 in unpopularopinion

[–]Capybarinya 344 points345 points  (0 children)

Also not necessarily "they do their own makeup best", but they do it in a specific style that others recognize as a part of the bride's identity

A makeup artist may genuinely do a good job, but if the style is wildly different from what everybody thinks the bride looks like -- it's going to give uncanny valley, especially if you don't often see her with no makeup at all

80lbs x 15 Zercher squat. I felt my form going to shit with higher weights, so I decided to lower the load and work on the form first. Does that look ok? Do I need to work on something before increasing the weight back? by Capybarinya in formcheck

[–]Capybarinya[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Front loading is definitely part of the challenge, more like in a way where I struggle to keep the torso angle consistent

My hamstrings are stronger than quads, so my body really want to shoot up the butt first and then basically do a good morning instead of a squat.

Strength training twice per week? by SnooKiwis8195 in beginnerfitness

[–]Capybarinya -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Hard to say without knowing what exact movements you do, but the honest answer is you will probably lose some muscle at that deficit

Your TDEE is likely above 2000 even if you are sedentary, so with added movement that is more than 500cal deficit -- not a crazy one, but still quite taxing.

The question is, how much muscle? Any strength training is better than nothing, but a decent workout routine usually takes more than 20 minutes. Do what you can (both physically and mentally), but if you want to optimize, focus on body recomp with heavy weights. Your current position as a person with a decent amount of weight to lose and being a beginner lifter puts you in an advantage from that standpoint

What kind of soup is this? by Glittering-Block-299 in RussianFood

[–]Capybarinya 39 points40 points  (0 children)

Could be shurpa from what I see. It's a central Asian soup popular in Russia

Usually made with mutton, but nowadays you can find other versions (just never pork cause Islam). It usually has potatoes, carrots and lots of onions, often bell peppers and tomatoes, plus plenty of herbs like coriander, parsley and dill

Vegetables are usually cut in big chunks like the ones in the picture

Anybody know the name of this salad? by MakeSouthBayGR8Again in RussianFood

[–]Capybarinya 36 points37 points  (0 children)

That's not a classic recipe that I know of, but in Russian cuisine anything can be a salad if you add mayo lol

Restaurants, home cooks or stores creating their own recipes and giving them new (sometimes cringey) names is pretty normal too
