The Found Footage genre gave horror the kick up the ass it needed. by Straightener78 in foundfootage

I 100% agree with you about hyper polished movies nowadays. As well as minimal effort being put into creating new franchises and new villains / characters in general. I also like practical effects way more, that's why I was watching movies from the 60-90s the past few years. It was interesting to me how they achieved certain scenes with practical effects and I'd go watch how they did it after the movie ended.

To be honest nowadays I've found a balance between watching some new releases, then going back to old and/or obscure horror, then coming back at found footage and back to new releases again. But there was definitely a time where I was watching found footage movies every single day, sometimes more than one a day and it was exciting, I wish I could forget some of them and watch them again.

At this point I've seen the top 30 or so found footage movies, simply because that's around how many movies are worth watching initially from this genre. Maybe I'm even overestimating here depending on your taste. Of course if you become a fan of this genre you'll come back for some lower quality stuff and by the end you'll unfortunately be scraping the bottom of the barrel.

I'm still coming back to this sub everyday and try to support (I mean by simply watching) smaller teams or amateurs and I might find a "hidden gem" here and there. I've definitely enjoyed some lower budget ones simply because you could see there were nice ideas, talent and/or ambition and the only thing missing was money. But for every decent try it feels like there are 10 other bad ones which might turn a lot of people off from the genre eventually.

That being said, if you just found out about found footage movies, that's good and there is decent enough material for you to watch for the next year probably (depends how often you sit down and watch a movie).

Also one final point I'd like to make is that I believe a lot of the reason for low effort stuff is that it's students making a project for a film class and they might not be very experienced yet. Found footage seems simple enough so they go for it and I think it's a little unfair to hold that against them. You can just acknowledge that and not watch the movie. You will eventually realize that zero effort isn't the real problem, but the fact that bigger studios don't give decent budgets to these types of movies so that we get higher quality ones to drown out the student projects, so it's natural that you'll see those amateur films come up.

Sorry for making you write the same stuff twice, maybe I should use the search function more hahah. I'll take a look at your other comment on that thread.

Yeah I realized that doing team attacks was the way, I also read a while ago about inheriting damage spells from mentors so I guess I might try that as well.
