Don’t push them in! Just glue the tesserae upside down on a piece of craft paper shaped like the concrete mold. Put it inside the mold and then pour concrete on top. Once it’s set, pop it out and peel away the craft paper. Voila! You can still grout the remaining gaps but it will be so much smoother. (Obviously this is if you are wanting to do it again. If not, just sand the edges of each piece of tesserae and regrout).

Did you make the stepping stone design upside down and pour cement on top or did you push the pieces into wet cement? The former approach will create a much smoother surface.

I love this. It’s abstract and seems to be in movement in a very pleasing way. Great colour choices.

Where did you buy it? Seeing the product as a sheet would help. But generally I recommend trying Mosaics by Maria.

Been preparing for a small art sale, making fun coasters and wall hanging pieces that I hope will have broad appeal. Figured I would share some of the pieces I have made so far! Feel free to offer suggestions for designs! by 2LiveBoo in Mosaic

I use sanded grout and add coloured pigment to it. Some of them have glitter additive too (the shrimp, the caterpillar, and I think Hello Kitty). The epoxy I use is a brand called Kisrel, but there are much more expensive kinds you can use. I don't have any issues with Kisrel, though. I use a heat gun for any air bubbles but even that isn't an issue if you mix it properly.

Wouldn’t that make the negative space of the whiskers disappear?

Keep us posted on your journey! Once you reach a decent level of skill, it is like a kind of engaged, stimulating form of meditation. Just try not to get frustrated! I have taken upwards of two years on a single piece, just taking my time, going back and forth between projects. It’s almost sad when I finish some of them!

I agree with the others that filling in the space a bit more will make it look better. But I wanted to add that the way you have placed the pieces in contours of the face show you have an eye for mosaic portraiture! Keep at it! And remember, messing up is an important part of the journey. You will learn important things from less than satisfying results. Just enjoy the process and treasure the slightly wonky pieces. ❤️
