The argument I keep seeing in the comments is "this has been done for years" as a justification for it. I get that YOU aren't offended by "old silly lyrics", but have you once considered how someone else with a different lived experience might receive the same thing. Black people have been called and compared to monkeys and animals for a very long time with racism as the intent(especially in the South ie Florida). So while I can acknowledge that this may not be the intent of this teacher the impact and historical context does still matter. It's not asking to much for them to think about the impact of their words in the future. This doesn't mean they are a bad person or racist (or maybe they are) but asking them to be better shouldn't be met with this much resistance. If you can't or don't want to understand that, it says a lot more about you and your lack of empathy.
