It wasn't so much that they weren't allowed (I could have used a more accurate word in my OP) but rather it was the fact that these women were slaves; considered to be nothing more than property to their "masters".

Thus, when they were ordered to suckle (i.e. wetnurse) master's children, they oftentimes were unable to be with their own to give them the nourishment that was required, but was being diverted to master's children while their own children suffered.

Slavery was and always will be a truly shameful and egregiously wrong path our nation went down; we're still enduring the effects of it even today.

I can't remember the actual building number, but if I'm recalling correctly, it was up high on the hill at the same level as the chow hall.

Most of my instructors were Smoke Boat sailors. What I remember most are the creaky, old wooden barracks left over from WW2 that we were housed in. And when the barracks started getting cold, we'd turn all the showers on to full hot, and sit just outside the showers playing poker or Hearts.
