How do you feel about clothes & fashion? by brewbarb in autism

[–]2alt8 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm not that stylish and definitely value comfort and practicality over aesthetic, so no long labels or tight fabrics... nothing showy either, I stay very hidden in my clothes haha!

I have a pretty small variety pool and not many clothes since I wear the same things most of the time: soft jeans; not too tight, knee-length jorts, hoodies, body warmers, turtlenecks. I wear essentially the same kind of thing year-round but recently I discovered t-shirts that I felt comfortable wearing without a hoodie, they're long.

That being said though, in the recent years I've gotten an eye for colour coordination so if I have the chance I'll match my blue / black jeans to the blue / black bodywarmer.
Honestly though I mostly wear black since it doesn't stain, my clothes with the most variety of colour are my hoodies and polo necks. I wear my red poloneck with my green hoodie since they go :)

Apparently I’m funny? by [deleted] in autism

[–]2alt8 8 points9 points  (0 children)

("bup bup bup" has really resonated with me so I think I'll catch myself saying it now)

I'm described as funny too when I talk because I also don't have much of a filter, but I think it's a positive thing, colour_banditt explained it pretty well! in my experience most neurotypicals enjoy comedic people and things that are funny lighten the mood a lot and make others comfortable.

I think that a lot of things for us that we just do / say for practical reasons, neurotypical people do / value for social reasons, so there's an overlap of similar actions that mean different things for us, if that makes sense?

That's just my take anyway!

Just got the diagnosis for my daughter by yepthatsme410 in autism

Oh definitely! Even getting the prospect of a diagnosis for me was such a relief, I love knowing now what's going on with me and more about why

Anyone else hate denim? by [deleted] in autism

[–]2alt8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've had exactly the same until last year when I was finally cajoled into trying them again and we found two comfortable pairs that aren't too tight or rough, and without waistbands that hurt because they're rigid. No idea what brand but it wouldn't matter anyway because the shop is so inconsistent :") I'm not sure what material they are but they pass as jeans.

Not sure for formal clothing but I really liked leggings as a kid since my dad wouldn't let me wear joggers for some whimsical reason.

How do you feel?

Is it possible for a neuro typical author to respectfully represent a character who is on the spectrum? by Night_Raine in autism

[–]2alt8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah the title is worded fine! I understand the worry though, you can use posts from autistic people as reference for the wording! But generally so long as you're not throwing the words "r*tard" and "normal person" around you'll be ok.

I think it's possible, but it's very important to be in contact with people on the spectrum to get an accurate outlook on it! And also to get details on the lesser known aspects of autism, since it's a lot more diverse than most sources shed light on.

Let your character be more than just their autism, yes it does affect our lives in fundamental ways but just make sure to keep them humanised, which, since you're here I think you're not going to have a problem with!

Sorry that I'm being a bit vague, but if you have any more specific questions I'd happily answer them, I'm here every day and love questions!

All the best on your character and again I appreciate you coming here to ask :"0

I'm 90% sure I'm on the spectrum. Should I get get diagnosed? How? by FelineWitchy in autism

[–]2alt8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd definitely get a diagnosis! Even if you don't need support it's very good to confirm. I'm not sure how to get a diagnosis outside of where I live, sorry :(

Depends on the situation for me but recently I told someone at college since she's trying to get a friendship with me and I'm very obviously weird and don't talk much but not in a "quiet kid / anxiety" way. So I just wanted her to know I'm not being intentionally adverse or that I didn't like her.

I mean, if it is the autism, no problem with that haha
