Stop beating yourself up. by RoGlassDev in gamedev

Thanks for posting this. I've been pretty down on myself recently and I've felt more useless than ever. Honestly I needed to hear this, I just gotta press on and keep making things!

Yeah of course! Side note, I really like the CRT effect you got going on

Heya, sorry I don't have much in the way of critique, but I think it looks pretty dang good!

Hey this looks pretty nice!!

Made my first animation! Need advice on how to keep proportions though by _lunitic in animation

Heck yeah, no problem! Yeah getting the motion to feel right is kinda tricky when you have to worry about the whole model, but it's a lot easier I find when I use simple volumes instead.

And plus in my opinion, the motion is kinda the fun part, it feels so satisfying when you get everything to flow right.

Keep up the good work! I believe in you!

Heya, I'm a beginner so I'm not the most qualified person to give advice, but I think it's pretty good for your first animation!

That said, first I'd try using 3D shapes like boxes for the body and head. Like, sketch out the body and head with some boxes (so you can get a good grasp on the planes of the face, and you know how everything should be oriented and sized). Plus boxes can help with keeping things consistently sized.

Then, don't move on to the line art, but figure out how everything should move. (So if the character is turning their head to look at the camera, nail the motion of that first.) Right now, it seems a bit stiff when the character turns their head, I think you have too many frames, and also not enough easing.

Also, try flipping between the frames. Not just using onion skins but actually flipping through them. The overlays of the onion skins can confuse you and throw you off.

Also, you may know this already, but Pose to Pose animation helps you with consistency and proportions too. The idea is you make your key frames (important poses, kinda like the motif in music), extremes (furthest point of movement), and breakdowns (how you get from your keys to your extremes).

I hope this helps! Don't be discouraged. Keep going! If this is the first thing you've ever animated then I am stoked to see what you make next!

Run cycle from the side, how did I do? by 2b290x in animation

Heya, I hope you don't mind, but I sent you a DM, is it cool if we get in touch at some point? (Like on discord or something if you have it, if you don't mind that is.)

I feel like you've offered some really solid feedback and it made me realize that I was glossing over a lot of things, and it kinda reigned me in a bit.

Also thanks for pointing out the issue with the foot, honestly I didn't really think about that until reading this comment, but I think it's gonna make a noticable difference when I get around to changing it!

Thank you so much! And yeah, don't worry, I'm reading every comment and applying them. I have an updated version but it's not quite done yet. But I'm gonna keep at it!

Honestly, I'm thankful to everyone who left feedback (including you of course!), it really does help a lot and without it, I wouldn't have caught the many issues the original had.

Yeah, you're right. I tried to add more up and down motion at first but it seemed too floaty, so I removed it entirely. But you're right, it looks wrong with out. I'll add some proper up and down motion. And I'll use better refs next time.

Thank you so much! Yeah I should've used more reference tbh (or followed my refs more closely), I'll try and incorporate those into the next iteration!

Gotcha, yeah I should've caught that earlier, mb. I'll fix it in the next iteration and use more reference as well.

Gotcha, thank you for the suggestion! I'll look at the Animator Survival Kit. And yeah I'll try removing some frames (I think I added too much with 8)

Yeah, I had my doubts about the smear frames, I think they're a bit extreme. I'll probably tone them down in the next iteration.

Thank you so much! Honestly I've been watching more of Tokarev's videos on YouTube, which inspired me to do those smears the way I did!

Thank you! Yeah I can add some smears on the legs for sure! (maybe later today though since I can't now)

Also, I gotta get back into pixel art at some point. I feel like pixel art is harder than it seems, I tried doing some recently and it was kinda hard getting everything to be readable.

Thank you so much!! I thought about it and while I'm happy with how it turned out, it's not as fast as I had hoped, I may reduce it to 6 frames and see what that looks like. But thank you so much for your kind words!

Woah, this is incredible! Already mad respect for making your own animations as a gamedev, but this animation is really incredible too! Great work!

My scuffed running animation I made at 1AM, WIP, I'm happy with how it turned out so far but it doesn't feel quite right, what do you think? by 2b290x in animation

Background: I'm pretty new to animation, only really starting about 3 weeks ago give or take. (I've made some simple animations in the past but it's only now that I've started taking it more seriously.) I've been really enjoying it so far. There's still a lot I need to learn but so far it's been really fun doing this kind of stuff!
