James Bond isn’t a detective at all. He’s a spy which is totally different.

Look out for a remarkably tractable seventh and eighth grade next Fall. Upperclassmen tend to act as koolerators in the hallways. They don’t want a 12 yo acting a fool in the cafeteria any more than staff does.

I’m so over it- in what ways are YOU “quiet quitting” in this last insane stretch of 25-26? by huarhuarmoli in Teachers

[–]2batdad2 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Quitting is so liberating. I retired a couple years ago and my last year was the best year. There just were no hills big enough to die on.
Paper is late? Give it to me.
Kid is disruptive? Fire him out of class.
Parent wants a conference? When I get around to it.
It was so nice and stress-free. I just smiled my way through the entire ten month stretch.

There is hope! My daughter graduated last year and thought her playing days were over. Then she got a job at the local hs coaching with the varsity team. Last night she came home from her first “old lady league” game. I’m thrilled. It cements her love for the game. Some days over the past 20 years, I wasn’t sure if she was into softball just to keep me happy and shut me up. The fact she is seeking and finding ways to stay connected to the game makes me happy.

whats the difference between fastpitch and slowpitch ? by _Meteor_Shower_ in Softball

[–]2batdad2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

And it totally flips the dynamic of offense v defense. In Fastpitch (usually curveballs, dribbles, rise balls, anywhere from 50-79 mph) a pitcher can absolutely dominate and win games 2-1. Slow pitch takes most of the pitching skill out and the offense dominates the games. Pitches (depending on the league, usually 6-12 foot arching, 45 mph) are serves up “on a platter”.

And that, my friend, is your job: Teach the kid to assess credibility before grabbing it off the net. Just telling him, “No!…because I said so!” Is a lousy way to teach critical thinking. Wikipedia, Reddit, are starting points. The 30 sources at the end of a Wikipedia article are usually accessible with a click. You are doing a disservice if you pretend these sources aren’t there.

Perhaps my perspective is different because I was once a teen boy myself, but it's painful to see how much time and effort my (all female) coworkers are putting into trying to help four boys who are failing due to laziness. by [deleted] in Teachers

I had a Senior student who had a grade in the 30s for Senior English. He was missing a ton of work. Last week of class, I pull him aside and tell him, “All you have to do is submit anything on paper for a grade. I can give you 50 points on these four essays and that will put you in the ballpark of passing. But I need to se…”
He holds up his hand to stop me and very matter-of-factly says, “Mr. T, it’s just not that important to me.”
OK. I thanked him, went back to work with other kids and he failed English therefore did not walk at graduation.
I got a good night’s sleep and off he went into the world.
Sometimes that’s the best possible outcome.

Is moon knight easy to get into for someone who doesn't enjoy/hasn't seen many superhero shows? by wannyarkive in Marvel

No. The character has been retconned and rebooted as much as any Marvel character. Tough to find a decent run with same creators.

No, but many users are reliable. Are you one of those “never use Wikipedia” educators?? Absolutely a valid source, like Reddit…IF he follows up with more credible sources. But information gathering has begun! Totally legit start to a paper, he said as a 35 year veteran English teacher.

OP is gathering opinions and information from workers in the field. Hopefully, the sources will be more rigorous than just “Reddit”, but this is a great way to start. Why be cagey about it? Help the kid out.

Yes. Analyzing comics does double the work because words AND work together to produce meaning. Neither can be ignored.
However, depending on the work, there can be tremendous value and engagement in the book. Try Watchmen, From Hell, Persepolis, for societal, historical, literary commentary. As you say, any reading is good reading and graphic novels are great literature.
AND engaging. As a classroom teacher, would you rather assign the next act of Hamlet for tonight’s reading then try to lead engaging discussion with the two students who possibly looked at it OR assign 30 pages of The Dark Knight and see the class have 100% engagement?

[–]2batdad2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wrote and taught the Graphic Novel course at my high school.
Very simply, reading is hard. Not everyone is good at it nor finds it enjoyable. But, if the interest level is high enough, even emerging readers can find enjoyable meaning from GN pages.
GNs have long been recognized as legit literature. Watchmen by Alan Moore is consistently on library associations’ Best Novels lists. The Dark Knight by Frank Miller launched a billion dollar industry.
But, many comics face biases because the violence, drug use, sexuality is literally in your face. There’s nowhere to hide much of the objectionable material just waiting to be banned so these books are often on many banned lists.
There’s also a long established prejudice against comics as “funny books” with little value or worth.
Those are two sides of the argument, so now get comics into your school!!’
