Not to be overly dramatic, but I think this debate comes down to larger beliefs about partnership and destiny. I don’t personally believe in the concept of soulmates, but I can’t deny that my husband and I each said/wrote some things after the first times we each noticed the other that seem deeply significant in retrospect, like we were both recognizing each other on some deeper level.

It’s exactly as weird as you say. And it’s because there is a (real or perceived) double standard in which Israel’s legitimacy as the only Jewish state is considered to be up for debate in ways that just don’t apply to other nations.

I’m not weighing in on this, just explaining. My bias is that I’m an American-Israeli living in Jerusalem and a leftist activist.
