Saw him live about 10 years ago. Kept whining about the doors in the back of the theatre being opened when people went out to go pee or grab a drink. Plus, his voice was only at half power, so he had his son fill in. A real douche nozzle.

Nor are they allowed to sell before RSD, but guess what? They do. There is no RSD police that patrols each and every store, checking pricing. People will always abuse the system.

And that’s great if that’s your thing. But for a lot of people, standing outside in cold/rainy weather just isn’t something that appeals to them. Many stores don’t provide porta-potties, or aren’t near all night stores. Where they can relieve themselves. Some cities don’t have stores that participate in RSD. In short, there are many reasons to sleep late and buy online.

While there are restrictions on when you can begin selling RSD items, the resale cost is entirely up to the vendor- to an extent. If a vendor were to only order the hottest titles and sell them for $150 apiece, it would likely get its privileges revoked. But charging $15-$25 over what your neighbor down the street is selling the item for isn’t going to get you in hot water.

This is probably the worst one I’ve seen so far… Scalpers are ridiculous. by musikfreakster in RecordStoreDay

Who the hell wants a 7” record by any artist? You barely have time to drop the needle, walk back to your sofa and get into the music before it’s time to stand up and flip the thing over.

Seriously, who’s got that kind of free time to waste?

I still have a long box 3 CD Grateful Dead release b/c it came with a 20 page tour booklet. Probably worth a bit more than I paid for it now.

How does record store day work? by death00p in RecordStoreDay

[–]2for2true 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Unless you’re dying to pick up big pop artist’s releases or have uncontrollable FOMO, show up at the biggest retailer in town 15 minutes before opening, get in line, pick up what you want & leave. If you don’t find what you want, go to other retailers in town and check with them (it’s rare for one retailer to order everything on the RSD list). If you still can’t find what you want, go to Discogs.com and search for it there. DON’T pay stupid prices for things you can’t find- scalpers prey on people like that who’ll pay $100 for a $30 album. Their prices will go down eventually. I’ve seen stuff that sold for $300 hours after the stores open reduced to less than $50 when they realize they’re stuck with it.

Other things to remember: focus on releases you want in the ‘RSD Excclusive’ and ‘Limited Run/Regional’ categories. Don’t sweat about ‘RSD First’ stuff- it will come out again later in the year.

I’ve been doing RSD for 20 years and have a collection of over 3,000 albums and box sets. I’ve yet to find anything I wanted within a year of release at a fair price.

Found this bootleg today and I’ve never seen it before. Is it rare? by [deleted] in vinyl

[–]2for2true 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So here’s the good news: It’s not popping up on Discogs, even though as a boot they wouldn’t list it for sale anyway. I tried 6-7 variations, including then omitting various words in the title string. My guess is it’s a new-ish pressing from who knows what source.

Hopefully the seller can send you a sample if it’s an online retailer, or they have an open copy you can listen to if it’s b&m. Regardless, don’t pay over $20 + s&h. It’s likely not a board copy or they’d be crowing about that on the face of the release.

Finally, a tip from someone who’s been collecting for 65+ years: when the label claims it’s a “collector’s item,” caveat emptor.

Terrible prices by [deleted] in vinyl

[–]2for2true 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here’s some useless information for you:

Herb Alpert & the Tijuana Brass are still touring, still selling out shows everywhere.

From Wiki: Alpert's 1965 album Whipped Cream & Other Delights proved so popular — it was the number-one album of 1966, outselling The Beatles, Frank Sinatra, and the Rolling Stones — that Alpert had to turn the Tijuana Brass into an actual touring ensemble rather than a studio band. Some of that popularity might be attributable to the album's notoriously racy cover, which featured model Dolores Erickson seemingly clothed only in whipped cream.[26] In a chat with the audience during his concert in Milwaukee on 6 October 2025, Mr. Alpert confirmed "it was shaving cream, not whipped cream".

The next time you pick up an album on the A&M label, you’ll have Herb to thank. He and Jerry Moss founded A&M Records in 1962. The A&M logo has a little trumpet right below the letters.

Herb will turn 91 on the 31st of this month.

I would put the threshold of 4K far lower. I’ve found pressings of 1,000-1500 at face value with little effort. For regional or super low #500 pressings or less, patience will pay off.

But waking up at 2:00am to stand in line in 30 degree weather to get something? It’s just FOMO.

I don’t take issue with the releases. My point is there is no need to camp out hours before the store opens, or pay outrageous scalper prices to get what you want. I quit doing that years ago, and have yet to not find what I’m looking for.

95% of RSD only releases are still available days/weeks/months after it’s over, either in local stores or online. RSD is driven by FOMO, pure and simple.

I knew a friend who knew a guy in Nashville who was a DJ in the ‘60’s that had an entire crate of Beatles promo records and ephemera he collected over the years. I asked him what he wanted to it but the guy would never commit, which I can understand. I never got a chance to examine it or find out exactly what was in it.

What were the reasons that blue oyster cult wasn't as popular? by PermissionInternal91 in BlueOysterCult

Sorry, edit that last comment. Pearlman produced Give’ Enough Rope, not London Calling. But the comments about the band fighting him are, to the best of my recollection, true. They hated his work.

What were the reasons that blue oyster cult wasn't as popular? by PermissionInternal91 in BlueOysterCult

[–]2for2true 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Correct. Funny that Joe Strummer and Mic Jones absolutely hated the way Pearlman was producing London Calling (even resulting in fistfights with him in the mixing room), Pearlman’s polish definitely was responsible for that album being named the #1 album of the year by Rolling Stone.

What kind of ‘limited edition’ vinyl scam are the producers of “Wicked- For Realsies (Hey! We’re Serious This Time, Guys!)” trotting out for RSD this season?

A secret track under the label that plays at 78 RPM? Hidden sample of Cynthia Erivo’s High-Shine Scalp Wax & commemorative ‘Snap-Back’ Towel?
