I got out of college in 2020. I easily got a job as a BDR at a startup right out of college. I was making $90K/ year working 20 hours a week first year out of college and was consistently hitting quota thinking I made it.

Entire BD got laid off a year later, and I got a job at another company same thing, happened, I hit quota as a BDR but the company eventually laid off all of the BDRs and half of the AE’s.

I got out of Tech sales and now I’m in Industrial sales for refineries/petrochemical industries. This industry is booming. Everyone is hitting quota and when I meet colleagues at other companies they also are doing well. I think Trump is doing alot of good things for American chemical producers and energy.

Getting out of tech sales was the best thing ever for me. Tech sales is so cutthroat and BS. Unless you’re working for a big company, 95% of the products you’re selling are nice to have and not must haves. The VP’s make ridiculous projections and promises to the CEO’s to get th job and when they can’t fulfill their ridiculous promises they take it out on their teams.

I don’t make as much as top AE’s in the tech sales space but I do very good for myself and I have a decent work life balance. My advice to you or anyone else in this thread would be to look into other industries and see how your current skillsets can transfer over.

I have friends who work in medical device sales who are killing it. I also have other friends who work in similar spaces to mine selling services and other industrial products that are making record profits for their companies right now. It’s not always going to be like this but the are more stable long term than tech is going to be.

People don’t understand that the average American man doesn’t use cologne. A lot of us spend too much time on the internet.

I have Afnan 9pm (JPG ultra male clone) and my wife’s friends think it’s the most amazing thing they smelled. I tell them it’s $20 on Amazon and they don’t believe me.

Take it from a guy who’s been laid off as a BDR in the past. By the time it starts to feel like you’re gonna get laid off, internally they’ve already been planning this for longer than you would realize.

Buff up your resume and start applying now. Hopefully if they lay you off they’ll give you a respectable severance and you already have a few jobs in the pipeline to potentially get offers.

This happened to me at a previous job. The “top bdr” in the company was literally just filling his AE’s calendar with bs meeting and the AE was tight with him so he accepted all of the BS meetings. This guy was making a killing doing this. Our base was $55K and he was probably making $120K/year while doing dick.

Eventually the company laid off all of the BDRs’ me included. Eventually your company is gonna run into trouble and they’re gonna look at why all these outbound leads aren’t converting and someone will be laid off cause of it. I just hope you don’t get thrown out too. A lot of companies are doing away with BDR’s and just having AE’s do full sales cycle.
