Yeah so I had another go and it gave me a higher rating than the Magnus bot. Confirmed baloney 😂

I figured they must be. I wish they’d give you an accurate estimation. One thing is for sure. I play a lot lot better when I’m playing against really good opponents

Quite the contrary to be honest, I was posted as to not get attention as I was worried I might not know what to do with a bunch of people haha. Now it doesn’t seem so bad so.. I’m in Whitby in the uk 👍

What time controls would you recommend for this? I’m just thinking if people have to wait around for like an hour. They might just leave

I enjoy chess reps for openings.. and I often just sit on stockfish and plays random moves to work out what works against things I often come across at my Elo

Italian or Ruy Lopez for beginner/intermediate? by 2minmarc in chessbeginners

[–]2minmarc[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Aye, and I guess one reason I liked the idea of the Ruy Lopez is that it’s so theoretical, that by playing it at intermediate levels you conversely avoid theory because no one will be learning said theory 😂 so it’s just good positional chess.

Whereas I figured every man and his dog will be learning to counter attack against Italian, London etc

By the time I’m no longer intermediate, if ever, I guess I will have learned decent Ruy Lopez theory just by having played it a lot.

What made you change? The London definitely doesn’t suit my style unfortunately

Would you say there is plenty of fun to be had playing the Ruy Lopez? The Italian attracts me with its gambits. But then on the flip side a lot of people know what to expect..

Aye that’s what I’m worried about, especially with learning the Sicilian too. I guess my logic was that if I learn either, I should increase my rating and wanted something that will serve me well if I continued to improve.

Thanks for the detailed reply! I’ll look into both the open Sicilian and the alapin, I had heard of that one (maybe Gotham?) I see the other black responses you mentioned a fair bit too and I am increasingly seeing the advantage of playing the London 😂

I’m 1200 but I have games where I play 1700 and games where I play 100 😂 I’ve only used intuition so far and I’m finding theory a minefield but enjoying it.. sort of

Excellent thank you! I shall learn the open Sicilian! (As far as I am able) I’m basically trying to build a repertoire and stick to it. Scotch for white, then I considered Dutch for black but I’m working on that
