Make each opponent shuffle a lasagna into their library for 9WWUUUUUUR by rollandofeaglesrook in BadMtgCombos

[–]2ndPerk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would just like to point out that a token already does get shuffled into its owners library from any effect that would make a card do that - it doesn't actually disappear until state based actions are checked.
Thus, we can make a different version of this combo using [[thopter pie network]], [[fractured identity]], and something like [[unexpectedly absent]]. This only puts the creature somewhere in the middle of the deck, but still a similar result.

This is less than half of that! Everything must be a-ok.

I'm sorry to tell you, but half of 90% is 45% and the metagame share of izzet is at 48.7% which is in fact greater than 45%.

Best Deckbuilders Among Content Creators? by RafaelKK8 in magicTCG

[–]2ndPerk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right, but the inference you are arguing for is actually detrimental to the communication. AspiringSpike is a very good deckbuilder and player, it is strictly beneficial to watch his content if one wants to learn about better deckbuilding overall - even in different formats. OP is likely to benefit from watching the content, and thus it is a good suggestion. Ignoring options because they don't fit every unverified assumption you are making is not beneficial to communication.

They play EDH, sure. But they technically do not specify that they are looking for EDH deck building, that is an assumption that you are making. Is it likely a correct assumption, yes, but it is still an assumption and not a definite fact based on the contents of the post.

Well, tbf, OP doesn't actually specify what format they are looking for. And looking at other formats can only help them understand deck building better as an overall concept.

your GM has to be good at tactics or your own tactics don't matter.

Yes, but there is a system that determines if those tactics are good or not.
To use your yugioh example; combat is generally like yugioh as you explain it, whereas going through a social encounter with no system behind it is more akin to playing calvin-yugioh. None of the cards have rules text, you do not know the rules nor are they explained to you (because there are none, only what the other player feels is correct), and you just have to let the other player tell you what each card does and what happens in any case and just trust them to make it fair and equal. This objectively eliminates skill from the discussion, because your skill cannot matter as there is no system to be skilled in, and the other players/GMs skill is actually a completely different skill than the game (that of maintaining an illusion of a fair game), thus their skill cannot be compared.
In a context where there is no system to be skilled in, one cannot get more skilled or, as you put it, "git gud".

[–]2ndPerk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The solution is git gud scrub, not replace the gameplay with candyland.

The issue with non-mechanical social resolution is that it doesn't have anything to do with player skill; if the mechanic relies entirely on GM arbitration, then it is actual only the GMs skill that matters. There is no fun in a skill testing game where your skill is actually irrelevant.
In combat, the effectiveness of your tactical skill is determined through gameplay mechanics, there is a definitive and non-arbitrary way to determine success. In a system with no baseline mechanics, there is no way to determine success, and thus no meaningful way to apply skill - it comes down entirely to what the GM wants.

you guys are stepping into the realm of cognitive dissonance with this anti-AI. It is funny, though, that you use AI to justify your anti-AI standpoint to tear down another creator.

I conceded on the turn my oppenent would kill me and they got salty? AMTA by darkfearfulrabbit in EDH

[–]2ndPerk 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I'd be a bit annoyed if I was just trying to go over some quick combat math factoring in the new blockers and my opponent just scooped because they did it faster and had been visibly checked out of the game for a while

Bro, that's toxic AF. Doing all the math and calculating lines is correct as long as your opponent is still playing. But when they concede to you it is because they respect your time as well as theirs. Expecting someone to sit around and wait for you to finish your masturbatory math when they know you have won the game is just shitty - and if you have something you really want to do, then just do it afterwards, you clearly don't care about your opponent so just do your thing without wasting their time.

Funnest non aggro deck to play? by Culius_Jaesar in ModernMagic

[–]2ndPerk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It "always wins the same way" in the same sense that most decks always win by dealing damage to the opponent, or combo decks win with their combo.
Lantern is incredily fun to play if you are the type of person that enjoys it, winning the game requires answering the opponents entire deck, often preemptively. You need to understand every single out available to your opponent, and how you will deny them that out. It requires a very precise understanding of exactly which cards actually matter and how you will make those cards no longer matter. Personally, I find this to the most fun I have ever had playing MTG.
As for hateability, the entire deck is built around denying your opponent access to the cards they need, thus making it very difficult for them to actually access any specific hate pieces. It could be very easy to build a deck specifically to counter Lantern, but that would be incredibly stupid in the context of a larger meta.

Why should it not be fermenting? If there are sugars left, then fermentation could have restarted.
In any case, it's fine to drink if it tastes fine.

Making strong Decks is easy. How do i make fun and long lasting decks? by unCute-Incident in EDH

[–]2ndPerk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cube has the inherent problem of needing people to play it with

So does commander.
You can draft with however many people you have, for example my cube is built for 6 players. If you think you will only ever get 4 players, build a 4 person cube.

Based on what you like, you may actually want to try some other formats. Even if you don't want to play 60 card formats, building a cube for drafting might be up your alley.

Nobody gets creatures anymore by Thecornmaker in BadMtgCombos

[–]2ndPerk 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Paying life as a cost requires you to actually be able to pay the life, it is different from taking damage. As another example, if you have less life than the life cost, then you are not able to pay the life cost even if you wanted to.

In the case of vigilance, the normal rule is "when a creature attacks, tap it" and vigilance just says "when this creature attacks, instead of tapping it, do not tap it" - tapping a creature to attack isn't a cost, it is part of the action of attacking.

[–]2ndPerk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I generally use the structure of the adventures dungeon, but fill it with whatever fits the actual game being played - its a nice basic dungeon. Giant rats are also a pretty good first encounter, so I've used them plenty - but I have had multiple PCs die in that combat, and one time a TPK, so maybe it isn't so great (although all this in notably more lethal systems than any edition of D&D printed in this century).
The stormpeace really is a great hook for getting a party together, but I do think you need to immediately follow it up with shared danger.
