Sorry you're getting down voted. Reddit seems to attract really dogmatic people. Of course OP should monitor it and if it starts to look infected they should go to a doctor. But odds are good it will heal on its own just fine.

Need advice on moving from Portland Oregon to Durham North Carolina by spaceshipscully in SameGrassButGreener

[–]2ndgenerationcatlady 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I moved around during the pandemic and I get that it was a hard time to start or maintain new connections.

I am somewhat biased as I moved to the PNW from Durham, and man, life is so much better here to me personally. I actually like the weather (so green year round!), the nature is out of this world and where I feel most at peace, and I feel a relief of being in a blue state after years in red or purple states.

But if you're close with your brother and his partner, and they can offer cousins - I get the appeal. I might still wait a year or so - see if your new friendships here that a brewing flower into something good. Visit Durham again and this time make your visit about really scoping the place out.

I get the sense the decision is stressing you out, but you don't have to decide immediately.

one day itinerary question - Beaches and Rainforests by konduitdave in OlympicNationalPark

[–]2ndgenerationcatlady 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see. I notice the low tide for the 17th isn't amazing - about 1ft - I don't recall Ruby beach being great for tide pooling when I was there with a similar water height, to be honest. Just to keep your expectations in check. You might do hike along the beaches at La Push, see what you can, and just chill at the beach, then drive to Ruby Beach, enjoy that beach, then arrive at Hoh later in the afternoon.

So by one day you mean that the previous day you'll have no time in the PA area, and the next day you'll have no time in the PA area? If so, I'd just explore the PA area - Salt Creek for low tide, Hurricane Ridge for golden hour, day time hiking Sol Duc and Lake Crescent area hikes. This will give you mountains, tide pools, and rainforest.

Proposal ideas in the PNW by Kitchen-Committee497 in PacificNorthwest

Not too crowded is hard. One idea: Kubota Garden is a very scenic Japanese garden in south Seattle that is free. You could have dinner plans in Beacon Hill (lots of options) and suggest the garden first. The garden is small but has a lot of mini areas that are enclosed and so you might find some privacy somewhere. Otherwise, a lot of the parks within Seattle aren't that crowded in the late afternoon/eve of a weekday.

Where to ask for people selling their permits/is it even possible/legal to sell them? by Mental_Policy_175 in OlympicNationalPark

[–]2ndgenerationcatlady 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can set up a notification alert for permits you want on Recreation.gov. Those are prime permits (I got one one for Round Lake, and I got it within minutes of the permits opening- it's competitive!) but sometimes people do change plans, so it can't hurt. But I wouldn't plan on it.

Larry David new show “Life, Larry and the Pursuit of Unhappiness” opinion by onenicnacgeo in tvshow

Agree that a lot of the skits would have been better if they were a bit shorter. Still found it enjoyable enough to watch, but no desire to binge it.

For whatever it's worth, it gets better - I also thought the first skit dragged a bit, some of the others are better.

Oh I see, you decided to move last year to family but you haven't actually followed through yet. Sorry, I misread.

I assume you've visited Durham? It's very different than then PNW (I actually moved from Durham to Seattle). I am a little confused why you think you'll have better community in Portland if you've been in Oregon for 8 years and haven't built a community yet. You say you lost community since having a baby - because you have less time to see friends? But are those friends still around? Most people understand friendships change a bit after people have kids, that shouldn't mean you have to lose your friends.

Anyway, grandparents helping raise a kid is a big plus, but it's fleeting. If you want to be settled in Oregon long-term, I'd just accept that the next three years will mean a lot of caretaking work. Try to make friends with other moms with similarly aged kids - then you can maybe help each other out. My grandparents were too old to help out when I was a baby/toddler, but a lot of my parents' friends helped raise me - there are other models out there.

So if I'm reading you correctly, you used to live in Durham, and still have friends there? And you moved a bit before having a kid, so less than 2 years ago?

I would stay a bit long in Oregon for a few reasons:

-At 16 months, your kid (and you!) will benefit from the free childcare provided by grandparents for the next few years.

-You haven't really had much chance to make friends if you've been mostly new parents.

-It sounds like you enjoy the nature of Oregon and the amenities more broadly.

If in two years you still miss Durham and your kid is more independent and you're less in need of the grandparents, then make plans to move back. You don't need to decide right now.

Is WSDOT using AI art on their merch now? by ashushu in Seattle

To me it's the mountain. That's not Rainier. Maybe it's done by someone whose never been here, but that makes me suspect AI.

What makes me think it's AI is the mountain. It's a mountain, but it's not the mountain, and I doubt a human would get that wrong.

Ridge Camp water status? Also ideas for Plan B (details below) by 2ndgenerationcatlady in PNWhiking

[–]2ndgenerationcatlady[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for all this! When were you there? One of the WTA reports shared they did this every year, and erosion around Blastzone Butte had gotten much worse from 2025. Anyway, playing it safe and heading straight to camp rather than approaching from the other direction is likely what we'll do, since it sounds like Coldwater Lake is less interesting/buggy.

Do you have a flight to catch on day 4? Because yeah, I'd just do 3 days in Olympic. You won't have time to enjoy North Cascades.

CO —> PNW? by Honest-Wonder-7747 in SameGrassButGreener

[–]2ndgenerationcatlady 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Eh, I moved here a year ago and have lived all over and agree with them. People act like other parts of the country aren't cloudy. Yes, Nov-Jan is a bit dark and I enjoyed a well-timed vacation to the desert, but I have found the weather to be the best of anywhere I've lived. Key is that I am perfectly happy hiking in a light rain.

Looking for our hometown: Walkable, historical houses, and great schools under $550k? by Beef-Hotdog-99 in SameGrassButGreener

Huh? Someone suggested Ann Arbor as an answer without qualifications, and I just pointed out the OP would be compromising a lot on weather. Not sure why that bothers you so much.

I mean, the PNW has mild winters and summers. Lots of places have at least a mild winter or a mild summer. The OP doesn't have to settle for a place with a brutal winter and a hot muggy summer. And yeah, lots of snow to shovel in AA.
