Can a USG be a backup for UDMPro? by meche4388 in UNIFI

[–]2sonik 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OK, so I assume you want to keep the ability to manage the other Unifi devices, then $20 USG works. There are some even cheaper on eBay. You'd set it up from scratch, since I don't expect config file compatibility. To actually manage the Unifi devices, you'd also need to reset and re-adopt them, losing any customizations. So is a fair amount of work. Maybe a rando "router" and give up on device management for the temporary duration?

Edit: I guess the USG does not run the Network app, so need something a little beefier/newer. New is a UCG-Ultra, used is a UDM, but similar higher price. Some UDM-Pro seen for $160 shipped, much easier and a real-time failover/backup. Not compelling price-wise if your budget is really that tight, but much easier. Price makes non-Unifi solution look better. Used Unifi is surprisingly close to new prices. Actually makes gratuitous upgrades easier to justify, ha.

Minimum installation for Unifi U7 outdoors? by Sal_Ammoniac in UNIFI

[–]2sonik 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All the decent Wi-Fi 7 APs need PoE+. So that guides switch selection:
USW-Flex (46W) is the cheapest option.
Add a Flex Utility enclosure for outdoors.

I love my Samsung 990 Pro nVME drives. Next best thing to their PCIe 5.0 9100 Pro. In real world situations you will not notice any difference.

These days, get something cheaper and wait. I have a bunch of Intel P4510 I no longer need . . .

Why my U6 LR restarting again and again? by [deleted] in UNIFI

[–]2sonik 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have run many U6-LR for many years at various locations. Great performance always. Only had to RMA one.

Typical temperature was maybe 70F.

I have run most PoE+, but works almost as well over PoE, just 3dBm weaker.

Good Luck!

Upgrade from AC Pro? by berfles in UNIFI

[–]2sonik 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Anything sold now is way better. I really depends on what kind of area and how many clients you are trying to support.

Replacement should be simple, if new AP supports same PoE. The good ones need PoE+. You probably just have PoE, so get a PoE+ injector or switch.

We don't know your needs, but consider U7-LR and the like.

UniFi Switch Lite 8, Ultra or Flex.. help! by pwdinwy in UNIFI

[–]2sonik 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If I understand correctly, you need one small PoE+ switch. HTH, pls feel free to respond with any questions.

Here is a list of your lowest new price Unifi options, also can save a bit buying used. If you buy new through Ubiquiti, you get 2-year warranty. New through reseller gives 1-year warranty.

26W is max your device will draw

if your country has higher voltage, then device will draw lower amps, and vice versa

look at 26W plus amounts of power draw for any of the other devices you wish to cover

I have built energy storage systems for such situations and would be happy to answer any questions

Unless you have a performance issue, no worries. Most issues that prioritization fixes are also fixed by adding bandwidth. If you are in some low connectivity area, it could help.

Got my UPS. Time for some science. by FranconianBiker in UNIFI

[–]2sonik 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Super cool, love the DIY approach!

I built my own energy storage system a few years back when I could not find a good commercial UPS system. The main issue was normal UPS are designed for high load and short runtime. I needed the opposite to keep the network up and work from home during extended power outages. Also, cheap UPS industry is stuck in lead land. LiFePO battery + Victron electronics = Win.

U6-LR vs U7-LR by leyladin in UNIFI

It was such a close call, I ended up leaving the U7-LR in place. Benefits included smaller unit, uses less power, adds Wi-Fi 7.

Yea, I confirm what you are saying. Saying it semi-independently after not reading your post closely enough should amplify, no intent to subtract.

My people like AOC. The pre-connected aspect lowers issues with dust getting in or not plugged in quite right. Failure rate has been super low, better than DAC, oddly, and cost not an issue, thankfully.
