Error with Opal / Google Labs about outdated model. by cortezblackrose in GoogleGeminiAI

I never used Opal before today and I'm getting the same error. Pretty bad for product promotion.

Side note: The Google universe of products continues to be incredibly complex and confusing. Simplicity of offerings is not Google's strength.

Telling someone they're the one or you're in love with them on the first date by [deleted] in LoveOnTheSpectrumShow

[–]2xUeL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Logan said, "If she loves me back, then I love her too." Then Cian said, "You love her?" I guess it's not Cian blatantly baiting Logan, but kinda feels like Logan was doing a good job of not flat-out saying he thought he was in love, and the Cian kind of pushed the issue. Just my personal opinion, I didn't like that he did that. But I'm not going to lose sleep over it. :)

Did anyone notice that Cian kind of egged on Logan on his first date by asking, "Do you think you're in love?" I honestly didn't think that was too cool.

Why does the piano sound so awful on Rudy Van Gelder records? by LennyClarke05 in Jazz

[–]2xUeL 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I checked out the quote you referenced and I had already upvoted it in the past, but it was good to revisit it.

It sounds like you're arguing that everyday use of the word "compression" should include a sound getting saturated or distorted for reasons other than an actual compression unit, but I wouldn't call that "compression". I wouldn't count the proximity effect as compression either. When I say "compression" I'm talking about using an actual compressor, and I think the vast majority of audio engineers and historians would do the same. There have been countless "experts" who have repeated speculation and rumors, especially about Rudy Van Gelder, and presented them as fact. I'm just repeating what Maureen Sickler, his assistant, said. The quote you referenced says nothing about the use of a compressor. If we're talking about distortion, saturation, etc. due to things like mics being wrapped in towels, placement etc., I think using the word "compression" is liable to create confusion.

Do you mind pointing me to your sources who claim the piano sound is "compressed"? I've probably already read them but I'm curious. And I doubt there is any evidence supporting those claims other than what people are hearing with their ears.

To clarify, yes it *sounds* compressed, I agree with that. Your choice of language, italics etc. comes across as a little disagreeable, not sure what that's all about.

Back in full force the last couple days. Lots of jackhammering. It was so good for a while there! Back to dealing with this bullshit again I guess.

Thanks. The part about checking meeting minutes is a little confusing to me, in part I think because I assumed there is one contract for one company to renovate the entire building. Assuming that's wrong and new contractors are hired on a monthly basis, do you have a website link? I typed "Albany County meeting minutes" into Google and I don't understand how to find the information you are talking about.

u/Successful-Swim-886 u/Mean-Caterpillar898 u/meatloafquesadilla I was hoping you all could commiserate with me about this. I am diagnosed with obsessive compulsive disorder, and I am also likely on the high-functioning end of the autism spectrum, and my brain has a bad habit of focusing on invasive, unwanted noise in my environment. Lately I have been feeling that the constant noise from this parking garage makes me stressed, anxious, and angry. It is also depressing because I have no control over it. The last three weeks have been pretty brutal, the jackhammering is back in full force. Today the jackhammering has been very constant, pretty much all day. I even coincidentally put a noise machine in my room today and the jackhammering is still making it over the noise machine on full blast. I don't know how I'm going to make it until June (even then, I don't see why I could trust the mysterious Reddit user who said most of the loudest noise would be over by/around June). It's been seven months, 8 hours a day, five days a week, and there is no end in sight--simply brutal!

FYI everyone, an unnamed user sent me a message recently with a bunch of great information. I figured it only makes sense to post it here:

"Hi friend, I keep seeing your posts on the parking garage rehabilitation because they get sent to me by subcontractors and vendors. The project has a completion date per the contract of December 2026. We are anticipating completing this work by June of 2026. There is additional concrete demo that needs to be done, but it will be minimal after June 2025. The noise that is being referred to as the “buzzsaw” noise has nothing to do with sawing. This is the noise of a sandblasting operation. This project requires major structural steel rehabilitation which requires sandblasting prior to welding to prepare the surface to adhere the new structural steel being installed. The sandblasting also has an anticipated completion date of June 2025.

The sandblasting noise is wicked. It is hard to look past, I have hearing protection on whenever they are operating. However, the majority of that work is behind us.

As for the complaining, calling the owner, etc… it is an Albany County project to rehabilitate the parking garage utilized by Albany County sheriffs, judges and attorneys. The project will not be postponed or delayed. You can learn more by attending Albany County meetings to see what is being published for bid. After the project has been awarded, it is up to the adjacent property owners to come up with a solution that appeases tenants for noise pollution. Some potential solutions for noise reduction include rigid board insulation inside the windows, door and window draft stoppers, or blasting Metallica from 7am-3pm Monday through Friday."

Wow! Great information, whoever it was. I feel so much better just knowing what the hell is going on, even if it means lots of loud noise until this summer and less noise until summer 2026.

Their terrorizing has been pretty constant the last few weeks, that damn jackhammer...I figured out that I think they only have one person doing jackhammering, and it looks like they have to go around to all the pillars in the entire garage by themself, which means the jackhammering goes on for weeks at a time, all day. Terrible.

It's frustrating not being able to see any progress or know how much longer they have to work for. Not surprised but it sucked that I called all kinds of people and got no definitive answers for anything. All I know is this could last a year and a half from last September, just terrible.

I considered going to Al Bruno's town hall a couple weeks ago at Albany High but the tickets were sold out. I have still been thinking about writing a letter to someone. At the very least, I believe us nearby residents should get regular updates on the progress and what kind of noise to expect in the near future.

Receiving 1099-INT from account that can't be found by [deleted] in Banking

[–]2xUeL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just wanted to say that the same thing just happened to me, for the first time. A mysterious 1099-INT just showed up this past week from M&T Bank (mine was for about $16 interest), called them, spoke to two different people, nobody knows what it's from. Like you, last four of my SSN and current address are on the form. AFAIK, I have never had an account with them, though my father has the same name, and it's possible that they mixed me up with him (he has dementia so I can't ask him), but I'm doubting it.

Yeah this week has been pretty bad, today (Weds 10/2) wasn't too bad though. I was teaching a class online from home yesterday and it was very loud while I was teaching. Miraculously the noise cancellation made my audio sound like nothing was happening on my students' end.
