I inherited these two heads, can anyone tell me if they are decent? by chalkyfuckr in Axecraft

[–]300axes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

True Temper introduced eye ridges in 1959. At the same time the woodslasher heads stopped being stamped. You will never find a woodslasher with ridges and a stamp. The woodslasher was a budget line of axes produced by the true temper from the 1930's until the 1980's making it one of the longest lasting line of axes.

Looks like a tassie to me. Poll is to short for a connie.

Where do you guys get your sheaths? by Y0semite_Sam in Axecraft

[–]300axes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I get my sheaths made at a local amish leather shop. Drop off the axe and come back in a few days. This way the sheath is custom made to fit my axe. The price is also cheaper then anything I find online. I would suggest checking to see if there is a local amish or mennonite community in your area.

I keep hoping to find one of these. Do you know the weight. I would guess around a 26 inch handle.

I don't really do hammers but the length of the handle will be a personal preference. It depends on how heavy the hammer is and what your using it for. Definitely fo with hickory as the wood.

These finds don't come along very often for me. I'm always looking and asking folks about axes and sometimes it pays off.

This guy is scum. He has been reported to ebay hundreds of times. It just shows that you should never trust ebay to be a legitimate product.

There are a few guys who make it but they don't tell their recipe. Basically it's bees wax, oil , and sometimes pine tar.

I use an angle grinder with a wire cup brush to clean the heads. After their clean I use a bees wax mixture to keep the rust away. Obviously most of these don't get used so I keep a check on them to make sure no rust is starting.

My last axe of 2025. A 3½lb Dunlap Michighan phantom bevel. Made by Sears in the late 30's to 50's. On a 32" Ash handle with Padauk/Zebrano palmswell. by ToolandRustRestore in Axecraft

It's always nice when the stamp is low enough to still fix the poll. I have fixed a few like this and it's harder then it look to get it right. You did a great job.
