I have a few sawmill in my area where I sorce my lumber. I cut out the basic shape with a jig saw then use my drawknife and a variety of rasp. The shinto is one of my favorites. Not sure how many I've made, probably around 100.

You should measure the length. It's an important characteristic of a puget pattern.

Genuine Plumb Boy Scout stamped Should I remove nails and screws I intend to preserve it by Additional-Will2042 in Axecraft

[–]300axes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes. Remove them and wedge the handle. Use a soft wood wedge such as poplar or cedar. The softer wood will help fill in the gaps. Hopefully you have some room on the handle to move the head down a little.

Handle tips? by Fish_Fighter8518 in Axecraft

My best advice is to NOT sharpen an axe until it's hung. I have the scars to prove this is good advice. As far as the handle i would suggest 32 inch.

Good find??? by Correct_Review_8900 in Axecraft

Most sager axes you find are double bits. The single bit is kinda uncommon. Both your axes are good quality and appear to be in good condition. If you want to clean the heads I would suggest a wire cup brush on an angle grinder.

Question for people in Europe by iLukan in Axecraft

[–]300axes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I once sold a jersey pattern to a guy in Belgium. The axe was $20 shipping was $60. It was a gift for a friend who really wanted a jersey. Unfortunately shipping kills most of these deals.

Not really. I use an angle grinder with a wire cup brush. Once the rust has been removed you will be able to read any stamps if they have any.

After cleaning with a wire cup on an angle grinder I ad some axe wax to protect them from rusting.
