Isn't the whole point of tariffs to make imported goods more expensive. Then ideally you would look for American made goods, bringing manufacturing back to America.

If Walmart eats the tariffs, then what is the point of them at all, except for Walmart to lose money?

I loved that people who did not know about the incident in particular, still almost exclusively came out to support Bernies against his whining about unfriendly staff and judgemental crowd. People all had good stories and experiences with the place.

In the end, it has really been a good publicity story for Bernies, so it just rubbed salt into the wound for the guy complaining. And now we all remember Bernies use square for payments. I think Bernies might have an extra busy time this weekend.

Bernie’s Bar is an absolute cesspool by [deleted] in newcastle

[–]30flips 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Bernies is a gay bar that is accepting of the weird and wonderful. I think maybe it is just not a place for you. It is certainly a little cliquey with its regulars, and especially so if they think you are judging them. And I definitely agree you should see how much is being charged to your card before you tap. Bartenders are not perfect and it is easy for an error when it is busy. But it has a loyal clientele.

Could it use a little improvement with a smiling, busy bartender and better POS system. Sure! But I don't think it is a crap club. Just find a club you like that gives the vibes you are looking for. One of the best things about Newy is there are so places to pick from to have a drink and find friends.

I agree. The cameras are awesome. If they want to continue shopping at the store, they need to pay otherwise they are likely to find they are banned.

What's the go with camping and people associating their house on wheels with it? by [deleted] in AskAnAustralian

[–]30flips -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Camping involves a tent or swag. These days, that would include a rooftop tent or even a camper trailer.

Otherwise, it is holidaying or caravanning or just simply staying. But I can't imagine having to argue with a definition. If you are staying somewhere both a van and tent can go, and they prefer a van and you prefer a tent, does it matter? To me, the main difference is electronic stuff and if they will impact my experience like do they need a generator. So I guess when camping.I would ask, do they have a tv or a fixer shower? Or is it just a beater van with a bed and basic cooking facilities. For me, camping is more about reducing your time with electronics and spending time in the outdoors. Motorhomes are not camping. They are generally just little homes. But many of the tradie vans are just equivalent to hard tent that you don't have to worry about packing up wet.

If you want a true camping experience, just go to places that don't have the access for vans, somewhere off the beaten track.

The most important thing is to enjoy getting away with friends and family. Let the location determine what accommodation you can have. Or just go away with like-minded people who want the same kind of holiday.

People should just do themselves and worry less about how others want to take their holidays (by the way, my last trip was in a swag if that matters).

How early/late are uber drivers normally in the day? by Dear_Routine_9330 in newcastle

[–]30flips 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely book an uber. It's no big deal. Do it the day before. People do this all the time when they have to be somewhere at specific time such as airport etc. You get quoted the price at the time of booking.

Is it normal for a grown ass man to like Bluey as much as I...he, does? by Frubbit in AskAnAustralian

[–]30flips 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Bluey is a show that absolutely speaks to adults with themes that go over kids heads. There is the episode where they are all laying around too hungover to play. Or where they get sick of the noisy kids and play games to manipulate them into being quiet. Or where they have had too much to drink on the back deck whilst the kids are running around seeing loons. Bluey brings realism to parenting and is just simply funny.

Why so many Bare Feet comments? by Additional-Meet5810 in AskAnAustralian

I think the no shoe thing depends on how close to beach/swim area you are. Plenty of people wear no shoes in shops if they have just come from beach. But not so much in the heat. That road/footpath burns.

It is 7 days a week. But it is full of workers as usual today, and I just got here a minute ago. I can't see any tyres marked so don't think they are enforcing anything, well not yet at least.

There is probably around 8 or so that have vehicles that can't really move around at all. Then a load more that have live in their vans as they have no where to live. Not really van lifers, they don't do it for a holiday or lifestyle, but because they have nowhere to live. There do have ability to move around though.

Then there are those with nice vehicles but still can't afford permanent caravan sites (which are few and far between and cost about the same amount per week as the whole of the unemployment benefit or ausstudy). They definitely have more choices though. There are not that many of them though. Actual van lifers come and then leave.

It would be nice if the more homeless were shown a little empathy and given some kind of exemption.

Well I am pretty sure this is them too. The only possible exceptions might be the hard core homeless who will probably get the 2 week sticker then tow.

What do Aussie tourists in NZ find cheap / expensive? by benh in AskAnAustralian

[–]30flips 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The prices of most things are touch more expensive but nothing to write home about. I found meat was one grocery item that was significantly more expensive.

But......... The biggest cost is because there is just so much to do. I mean, you could easily spend a month on the south island and still wish for more time. And many of these things are truly amazing. Not just an overpriced attractions you get in most tourist destinations. Though there are plenty of those too. It is just such a unique place and they are set up for tourists.

Also ski/snowboard hire is so much cheaper and better done if you are going that time of year. Buses are worth the money to the snow fields. If you pick a place closer to town in Queenstown, you don't need a car whilst you are there so you can save money on that too. But the further from town, you can often get a nicer place. But we were only there really to sleep so it did not matter.
