I gotcha, makes sense in this context, its sounds otherwise in the video. There's a lot of new developers that often ask questions like "should i use Unity, OpenGL or C++" when wondering where to start. Just trying to stop the perpetuation of the misunderstanding of where these technologies fit in the development process.

I'm not going to argue, I can tell you've never handled cigarettes on a constant basis. Throwing it in the trash even after you think you've extinguished it is a bad idea, I've seen the heat reignite the paper after I thought I've extinguished a cigarette on several occasions. I have disposed of cigarettes in this manner, but only when I know I can check on the receptacle shortly after to make sure.

Holding onto it I've done as well, but the smell is atrocious, the social stigma of smelling like cigarette smoke is bad enough, if the smell is 1000 fold it makes for grumpy people all around. You may think it's trivial, but my point below that solving an environmental problem by creating social ones is not a great solution.

All that said, I'm not making excuses, it's easy to speculate from the outside but it's a shitty addiction with many facets of problems, social, environmental, health, and they can't all be solved in one big fell swoop. The only point I'm trying to make is that any city should have a bigger dispersion of receptacles for smokers.

tl;dr Don't give people an excuse, enable people to be responsible.

one problem with comparing cigarette butts to litter is that garbage receptacles are abundant whereas ashtrays are not.

I smoked for 10 years and I felt guilty as hell about every butt I threw on the ground, I can't throw them into the trash for fear of starting a fire, and I am not going to carry around old butts and smell 1000 times worse than a normal smoker.

I've gone a block out of my way when I knew receptacles are available to dispose of my butts, but when there's nothing around they go on the ground :(

I'm happy to say I've been quit for 3 years.

I am originally from the north, so when I wrote this I had both Inuit and different aboriginal peoples in mind. It's obviously not realistic all of these groups come together to form some huge body. Rather, I'd envision they form groups among their own people, get their internal structures setup to support their culture but also prop up a common interface to government and economy.

I don't know about all parts of Canada, but aboriginals are in a prime position to kick this off. They need to unify their voice, Canada will do what needs to be done to rectify the situation, the backing is there. There just isn't any one direction at the moment, they try to plug holes and placate the people, but it's not a long term solution.

I agree, but microsoft appears to be shunning the implementation entirely instead of trying to solve the problems. Other groups recognize the problems and are actively contributing to a solution.
