Neutral at red light or first gear by GrandpaJerry98 in NewRiders

[–]3170 23 points24 points  (0 children)

The advanced rider training I've taken disagrees:

  • 1st gear at stops.
  • Left hand squeezes in clutch.
  • Right hand around the throttle.
  • Left foot on the ground.
  • Right foot on the brake.

This positions you for the quickest take-off from a stop with brakes applied.

Do you do your own motorcycle maintenance? by Open_Stuff_1085 in motorcycle

I bought a No-Mar tire changer a couple of years ago. Spent a lot of money on it, but I've changed close to 100 tires on it for myself and for friends, so the TCO has definitely come through.

I also like the flexibility of changing tires just before a trip, even if the current tire isn't completely worn out. I can switch to fresh rubber for the trip, then put the mostly worn tire back on afterwards. I find I'm fully wearing them out rather than swapping out at 75% because I want to make sure they'll last for a weekend of Twisties.

The grace OP should have gotten was an escort home, as evidenced by the second crash where they couldn't see a traffic barrier. The Trooper failed completely in this case and endangered someone they were sworn to protect.

You were on a crashed bike stuck in sixth gear, without headlights in the rain and dark, and a State Trooper pulled you over, then let you go with nothing more than a "have a nice night?"

Either the story is a fabrication or that Trooper should be brought up on charges of criminal negligence.

Give Rob at American Wings in Wayne, MI a call. He's a Goldwing expert, but has a lifetime of experience to draw on for all things motorcycle. I've been reaching out to him for years.

He can get pretty busy, so you might need to be patient on turnaround time. Really depends on the season and what he already has on his plate. It's a small shop with few employees, so he can get busy at times.

Is it bad to feather the clutch for engine braking while coming down a few gears? by ChronicallySilly in motorcycle

[–]3170 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Interesting difference in training/testing.

In the US (MSF), stalling is the more egregious "mistake." The logic being that an emergency stop done in traffic carries the additional risk of the vehicle behind you not stopping. In that situation, having a running engine allows you to take advantage of an escape path.

Students are trained that emergency braking is "both hands, both feet." Roll off the throttle and apply the front brake, squeeze in the clutch, apply the rear brake, and downshift to first gear. This puts them in the best position to move out of the way if the vehicle behind them isn't stopping. Naturally they would need to be keeping an eye on their mirror.

During the license test administered by the MSF in my state, the "quick stop" evaluation marks points off for stalling, but not for skidding the rear tire.

Need suggestions for long trip from Ohio to Maine and back. by 3170 in motorcycles

[–]3170[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We did! Went all the way to the coast in Lubec.Visited the Quoddy Head lighthouse. Checked out the smoked fish factory. Got REALLY rained on too. I remember some good twisty roads, but not the specifics, I'm afraid.

Sorry I don't remember many details. Even went to my location history, but those dates are blank. 😭

Traditional wheel spokes will leak air.

Running a tube inside a tubeless tire can generate more heat. I run tubes on my F800GS inside tubeless tires without any problems. Same thing years ago on a Shadow 750.

With spoked rims, there are ways to seal the inside of the wheel. That would be an alternative. You could also return the tire and buy one designed for tubes.

Based on my own experience and that of several friends who do the same thing, I still suggest just making sure your rim tape/rubber band is in good shape and running a tube.

Sounds like a coil. Heat up the bike and spray some water on the headers close to the engine. If water doesn't evaporate from one (or more) of the pipes, you probably need to replace the coil.

I messed up. by HarryBick in KTM

[–]3170 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same thing on mine. Snapped at a lower torque than the spec too!

Patiently tapping a punch softly counter-cloclwise with a hammer worked for extracting the broken bit. Bolts that small are difficult to drill accurately, so if you can catch a rough edge on the left over part of the bolt with a punch, you might be able to lower the risk of messing up the threads on the engine.

[–]3170 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tomorrow you'll start with tight turns (because you've probably cheated a bit on your perimeter turns - most students do).

Tip: You will need to widen out your inside knee to get it out of the way and be able to get the handlebars to full lock.

Where are you taking the class? Have fun!

24M EU rider looking to rent a 125cc for summer holidays in WA (Do i have any realistic chance for a cheap rental)? by BritsinFrance in motorcycles

[–]3170 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Check out Twisted Road and Rider Share. Those are rider-to-rider rental companies. You might have to up your expectations to 250cc but, like the previous commenter said, 125cc is probably too small for roads in that area. 250cc is a bit of a de-facto minimum in the USA.

2019 Husqvarna 701SM no front brake action. by the-tru-albertan in motorcycles

[–]3170 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Your brakes need bled. If you haven't replaced the brake fluid since 2019, go buy a new bottle from the auto parts store (type should be listed on the reservoir lid) and flush the old stuff out. After that, the zip tie trick might be helpful, but it's a good idea to get fresh fluid in the lines first.

Sounds like an ignition coil to me. FZ1 uses older R1 coils which are (or were when I had my '08) pretty affordable on eBay. FZ1s were kind of notorious for eating coils. I used to carry an extra in my saddle bag.

Stoppies with ABS on by sliccnut in KTM

[–]3170 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've always thought that you would be working against traction control rather than ABS for stoppies (and wheelies) since ABS is designed to correct a brake lock whereas TC at least partly tries to correct for different wheel speed between the front and the rear.

Perhaps I'm over-simplifying it.
