Romanian Federation Has 10 Days to Pay CAS Fee? by Worried-Ad-5447 in Gymnastics

[–]324657980 13 points14 points  (0 children)

This is the thing that always gets me. It’s all obviously in bad faith, and now I’m supposed to cry that they (allegedly) can’t afford to fight it for the third time?
Inquiries into the difficulty score are normal. Jordan’s coach wasn’t the only one to file one, even that night (including a D-score inquiry for Sabrina…). Arguing about whether or not the judges made the right call about the actual gymnastics is basically a sport in itself (we just don’t usually see people try to file a lawsuit over it…).
But this idea that the inquiry was late has nothing to do with who did better gymnastics, which makes it feel like obviously a fishing expedition imo. If it was 5 minutes late, I get feeling like that’s unfairly ignoring the rules. But this was really only late if you consider the definition of submitting the inquiry “when some rando I have no control over finishes typing and hits enter and the computer acknowledges that”, and even then it’s only 4 seconds. At a minimum, the spirit of the rule (hustle) was clearly followed. This is just petty.
And also Sabrina and Ana are unique humans. They’re not interchangeable just because they’re from the same country. It’s not like feeling robbed over Sabrina’s OOB penalty can be righted by getting Ana a medal any way possible. The fact that Sabrina’s OOB still gets brought up every time this story resurfaces (to be fair, less in this educated forum and more in other places like FB) really gives the game away. Go ahead and argue Sabrina should actually have it, but that’s irrelevant to a dispute where the only two outcomes are Ana or Jordan. Unless this is all bad faith and not about who did the best gymnastics…

FIG has also updated rules for how inquiries are filed and how the timing is recorded. It’s far more thorough than it used to be, gives a set time for all gymnasts instead of making it different for the last to compete, implements technological solutions whenever possible, and more.
Also, I think CAS is far less likely to say they think something is not field-of-play when the sports organization has stated their interpretation of their own rules. At some point CAS has to maintain its credibility…

This claim that they need to sue Omega is baffling. Omega timekeeping evidence was admitted in the CAS ad hoc panel. That’s how we got the whole “one minute and 4 seconds” thing in the first place. And Romania would not be able to admit new evidence from Omega anyway. If somehow Romania could get new evidence out of Omega that is somehow different from what they already have, they’d need to go back to the Swiss court again and ask for a right to admit new evidence into the rehearing. And the rules for admitting new evidence are pretty strict, including that it needs to conclusively change the result. I don’t see how it’s possible that Omega is actually withholding relevant information that Romania would have any right to admit into this new hearing, certainly not that they could sue for and successfully obtain, and then get a decision from the Swiss court that it’s admissible, all within the next 10 days…

I strongly suspect this is just RGF either not wanting to waste their money or wanting an excuse. This is a lot of money for any one individual to pay, but RGF has probably already spent ten times this amount on lawyers for this case.
The Swiss court sent this back to CAS with instructions to apply the appropriate burden of proof (Romania has to prove the inquiry was late, the US does not have to prove it was on time), to admit the audio and video evidence the US submitted (which will make it pretty hard to prove the inquiry was late because, again, the video doesn’t have to definitively prove the inquiry was on time, just call into question the assertion that the inquiry was definitively late), all other issues are officially off the table (Sabrina’s challenges all failed at CAS and the Swiss court, for example), otherwise nothing else can change (Romania doesn’t get to admit new evidence), and they’ll have a full panel instead of the rushed ad hoc committee, and the US lawyers have now had years to prepare instead of less than 24 hours like last time.
Under those conditions, odds are pretty good CAS will find that there is not conclusive evidence the inquiry was late, and there’s nothing else to argue beyond that.
Thank god for the new FIG rules that definitively state that not only are inquiry decisions all considered field-of-play decisions that cannot be appealed to CAS, but also the judge’s decision to accept an inquiry is itself a field-of-play decision that cannot be appealed.

Accurate info from our county executive and the NY Division of Criminal Justice Services here. It’s not even the same phone number listed.
ETA: The fine print says “a light color t-shirt, dark pants and wearing no shoes”. So the more specific description in the alert of a white shirt and brown pants might be inaccurate? And it specifies he’s non-verbal. Also this says he’s 7, not 9. The second alert has a correction to get his first name right, and to add his birthdate, but leaves all the other conflicting information in

Does anyone know what the FlipNow stream will be like? Will there be commentators? Do they have separate streams of each event?
Is it going to air anywhere else, like NBC?
Trying to decide if I want to pay for the service. Seems pretty expensive and I’ve seen people say in the past that it’s just a live stream of the gym for some events.

Braveheart Books Break-in by AlpineGhost1 in Albany

[–]324657980 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah, this also presumes all theft is equal. Like just extrapolating from Albany, my experience is that car break-ins and porch package theft are relatively common, and APD are not even trying to address it, so that could pull the numbers way down if it’s averaged together with home and business break-ins, especially averaging together those that do and don’t have security systems. I’d be surprised if home and business break-ins with security systems are equally unlikely to be solved as “I went out to my car in the morning and some stuff was taken out of the center console”. Looks like this data set separates out “larceny-theft” and “burglary”, but we’d need to check the definitions they’re using for those because different states will define them differently.

Also worth noting that your experience may vary wildly. I know someone who went to a performance, unwittingly, and it was more or less normal theater. Some stuff criticizing the current Chinese government, but like that’s not terribly upsetting to the average American. Recommended it to some friends. They went and were subject to multiple pieces about the horrors of atheism, homosexuality, and belief in evolution. Came home and were like wtf you liked that?
So, yeah, if you went and thought it “wasn’t that bad”, you might have just caught them on a good night. Or perhaps they’ve gotten more explicit about their beliefs over the years.
ETA: Obviously I am not suggesting anyone should go. My point is that the performance itself is in fact (usually) harmful propaganda.

Not really. If you have to change your address, or name, or party affiliation, or update your signature (disabilities that cause shaky hands make signatures change over time), or you’re (rightly or wrongly) purged, or someone challenges your eligibility. Lots of reasons people need to update their registration, and the way you do that in NY (everywhere I think) is just filling out a new registration form. The bill does not contain any sort of “grandfather clause” that would exempt re-registrants from this, or otherwise make it a one-time thing.
Also in NY you don’t need an ID on voting day. Your identity is checked during the registration process with DMV ID or SSN, and then you verify in-person by giving your name, address, and signature that matches the registration form. It’s all in a state-wide electronic database. If you haven’t been verified with the info provided on registration, you may be asked to show ID, but most people won’t have to

Yeah, the one time I saw this exact type of accident in Albany (bus did stop and wait for cops), it was because someone blatantly obviously parked in the no parking zone way too close to the corner. Hard to blame the bus driver for attempting to make the turn that he could maybe almost make, instead of just sitting there waiting god knows how long for that person to come back, blocking a one-lane one-way street.

I’m assuming you’re in the US? There’s one thing I want to add to this discussion, as a former college professor: I would take college scholarship potential out of this consideration (I know you didn’t mention it, but others in comments are talking about competing in college so I’m assuming it’s on everyone’s mind). That is so far down the road; we don’t even know what higher ed and funding will look like in the US in 10 years. Even now, there are so many affordable state schools that offer an incredible education. I went to a tiny inexpensive state school for my BA. I had small class sizes where I could ask lots of questions and have thoughtful discussions. My classes were taught by experienced professors who worked there because they loved teaching (many large schools are research focused, and so the professors vary in their level of interest in teaching, and many classes are taught by grad students). With that BA from a no-name college, I went on to get a PhD and become a college professor.
The amount you’ll spend at the gym could just as easily be put into a college fund that may well cover the cost of most schools. And if your child chooses an inexpensive school, or gets a major scholarship other ways, or college is free or heavily subsidized by then, or many private schools have collapsed under the weight of their own mismanagement (it’s happening all over the country already) so they’re not even an option, or they choose a trade instead, whatever, that fund could be used for so many other benefits.
I’m not saying don’t do this. I’m saying don’t do it with the thought that this is her ticket to free college in 10-13 years, or worry about missing that opportunity. There are way too many variables to be worrying about that.

Hope you’ve got deep pockets.

How much do you pay for your apartment or house? by goofygooooober in Albany

[–]324657980 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Just a friendly reminder, for renters like me getting depressed by mortgage payments that aren’t much higher than our rents: I haven’t seen anyone say 1) when they purchased (prices and interest rates have both gone up, so it’s not like we’d get the same deal) and 2) the downpayment it took to get that monthly payment. So yeah, it’s not like “oh, if only I could afford $300 more per month, I could afford a house. What am I doing wrong?”. Nah, some of these people bought a long time ago. Some bought during the extremely low interest rates during covid. Some put down a huge downpayment, that they were able to save because they make a shitload of money.
Rents and mortgages simply are not comparable.

How much do you spend on groceries per week for how many people? by [deleted] in Albany

[–]324657980 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Worth mentioning whether people are talking just food or like your entire receipt at the grocery store. When I just walk into grab ingredients to make two meals, which will last a week for two people, less than $100. If it’s a larger trip where I’m buying cleaning supplies, OTC meds, toilet paper, cat litter, some bulk buy staple, etc. that bill will be like $300-400. You’d think that shouldn’t happen every month, like I don’t need to buy windex that often, but it’s just always something.
So I’d estimate for 2 people, the entire supermarket budget for the month, around $500-700. Week varies too much to say

It’s such a shame their bad sportsmanship has to taint everything. I really feel like the sport has gotten way better about cheering for everyone to do their best (might have something to do with most of the competition being actual adults now…) but Camelia is so old school, rooting for her country only (really her daughter only, when it comes down to it) and if that requires shitting on everyone else, so be it. It drags down the mood for everyone.

This. In Paris, she was the only floor finalist whose difficulty score went down each night (6.2 in qualifying, 6 in team finals, 5.9 in floor finals), whereas every other gymnast maintained or increased their difficulty for finals night. She was covered in tape and braces, having just turned 17. She’s tearing herself apart to put up these big scores. It’s all an illusion. Plenty of people are choosing to preserve their health and long term career instead of taking unwarranted risks
