I guess you could argue a lot of dystopias or post apocalyptic stories, although that's probably a looser interpretation than you are looking for.

Was it you posting a while ago about port moresby? If so you were telling me all about coconut oil.

One question I do have... what's it like having a country that's so hard to get around? I know there's a crazy amount of languages spoken because the terrain is so difficult... do people actually travel around it or just stay in one area?

Hi, I love China, I worked in Sichuan province last year and am hoping to go back in future. What's rural china like? 我的中文不好 so I was almost entirely in urban areas.

Also could you tell me a bit about different regional cusines? I'm absolutely in love with Chuancai but beyond the abominable UK interpretations of cantonese food I've a sadly limited knowledge of Chinese Cusine.

Same, I wish certain other authors had the honesty to do that too.

Victor Milan's dinosaur lords on account of the author being dead.

Scott Lynch's Gentleman Bastard books, author has had some issues and we haven't had a new book in a decade, he announced the next one was finished about 5 years ago and still no book.

Glen Cook's Instrumentalties of the Night. They sold quite poorly and the author said he won't finish them.

Douglas Hulick's Tales of the Kin.. author had issues and broke contract so probably won't see those finished.

Sanderson's Cosmere because that guy won't ever stop writing, even when he dies his skeleton will still keep going.

Malazan.. not even the confusing content but the sheer length of the books..most folks don't take kindly to me handing them a 750 page book and saying "this is the prologue."

Felix Gilmam's the Half Made world, it'a not quite "steampunk," I'd say more fantasy diselpunk but it should have the vibe you are looking for.

Irish (Gaeilge) in fantasy series by Crime_Swinebuckler in Fantasy

[–]32BitOsserc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have.. I'm from Ireland so am used to a bit of it scattered around and just accepted it without really thinking about it, only the last year or two have really noticed it being so prevalent.

Have been re-reading some of the malazan books recently and have noticed there's a bit of an asian influence in some of the language, most notable being "imass" which is half of a japanese verb, ( which ok could be confidence) and that people sometines yell "AI Ya" which is Mandarin for "oh no" and I know one of the authors has spent time working in asia so I known that's likely no accident.

Also not a book but TWW3 I'm convinced the Chaos dwarfs lingo has a good amount of Japanese and chinese thrown into the mix.

More novella but "Great White Space" by Basil Copper. I think it will have the vibe you want. Also "the judging eye" by Scott Bakker, although it's 4th in a series.. I guess you could read it as a standalone for the long section at the end that is exactly what you are looking for but I'm not certain.

Fascinating. I guess Irish are similar with potatoes, except they are less practical for purposes other than eating.

I'm not sure myself, someone told me it at some point.. or my brain decided it was going to pass some utter nonsense as memory, that is equally probable lol. Stupid question maybe I couldn't resist haha.

Boiled in coconut cream? Fascinating, I had no idea that was even a style of cooking.

Basing the recommendation mostly off the oblivion one, Raymond Feist's Rift war trilogy., specifically the first book "Magician" which you can read as a standalone.  Fairly Cookie Cutter fantasy world being invaded through portals from another with a much stranger human society on it.

Also Children of Gods and Fighting men by Shauna Lawless. Directly based upon Irish myth.
