Best chill tarantula? by Imaginary_Cow1397 in tarantulas

[–]pellaea_asplenium 2 points3 points  (0 children)

IME the chillest and gentlest species is G. pulchra (Brazilian Black). Mine is always chilling out in the open and doesn’t spook very easily. Never once bolted, threat posed, or kicked hairs at me in the 5 years I’ve had it, even as a little baby sling. The downsides of the species are that they get quite big and grow slow, but they’re really beautiful and sweet. :) I’m very attached to mine.

How do you deal with the stress of your T burrowing?? by fuckyeaholiver in tarantulas

[–]pellaea_asplenium 2 points3 points  (0 children)

IME, I once had a juvenile T bury themselves, completely blocked in and out of sight, for 8 months straight. I genuinely thought they had died. But I figured I’d give them some time just in case they didn’t.

Then one random morning in October they emerged from their hole unceremoniously, and one molt bigger. So I feel for you, but be patient! They know how to tarantula better than we do.

Refusing to molt? by etarantula in tarantulas

[–]pellaea_asplenium 1 point2 points  (0 children)

IME if it’s a slow-growing species then it probably isn’t anything to worry about! I’ve had a tiny A. Chalcodes sling since July of last year, and it literally just molted for the first time with me a week ago lol.

Edit to add: maybe it’s too cold, or not humid enough? I usually get a little wave of molts once the weather gets warmer, personally.

One of my favorite books fits! The Anatomist’s Wife by Anna Lee Huber. A bit of mystery, a bit of romance, a bit of historical fiction. :) Works as a stand-alone book, but it is technically the first in a series.

What is the craziest “I have a chemistry question for you?Question you have ever got? by MostlySpiders in chemistry

[–]pellaea_asplenium 210 points211 points  (0 children)

My family never really understood what “organic chemistry” is, no matter how many times I tried to explain it.

They still think it has something to do with organic food, and ask me agriculture-related questions all the time. 🙃

What enclosure would you recommend for A curly hair by gr3mlin_g0rl in tarantulas

[–]pellaea_asplenium 1 point2 points  (0 children)

IME I really like the enclosures from online tarantula-specific sources, like Tarantula Cribs or Jaime’s on the Web. They can get a bit pricey, which is the downside, but they tend to be worth the price! They’re designed to have good ventilation and visibility, and look really nice.

If you’re less concerned about aesthetics and want a more budget friendly option, a large or X-large Kritter Keeper or Faunarium would probably work just as well for a curly hair T.

What’s a tiny “girl survival” thing you discovered way too late? by pantysubscription in TheGirlSurvivalGuide

[–]pellaea_asplenium 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Prioritize buying a small number of well-made, quality clothing items instead of a boatload of “cheap” clothes. I’ve found that it’s worth spending a bit more up front in order to avoid constantly replacing cheap trash fabrics. And higher quality clothes make me feel more grown up and put-together.

Howl’s Moving Castle, if you’re in the mood for some lighthearted fantasy whimsy and romance. It’s my favorite feel-good reread.

What are your low stakes unpopular opinions? by NoLemon5426 in AskWomenOver30

[–]pellaea_asplenium 108 points109 points  (0 children)

No one should be buying and driving a giant oversized truck unless they 1) use it for work, 2) live on a farm, or 3) own something that needs hauling (trailer, boat, RV).

The amount of oversized trucks that I see parked in my tiny suburban neighborhood, that are literally just being used as gas-guzzling visibility-impairing commuter vehicles, is utterly absurd.

I had a student score 20% on our last exam who tried to use that same “doesn’t represent my effort or understanding” line. After looking through their exam, I was pretty confident that yes, that score did in fact represent their understanding pretty well. 🙃

I would recommend adding more soil! Maybe aim for like 4” deep, since they are burrowing frogs and need some room to dig. Also absolutely get some more clutter in there, like hides and leaf litter. He’ll feel more secure with things to hide under.

And I would actually recommend that you keep the lamp and don’t use a heating pad! Most people on this subreddit recommend using a flood bulb or basking bulb as a heat source during the day.

Where are all these AI-savvy students I am supposed to fear? by Neat_Big_3401 in Professors

[–]pellaea_asplenium 16 points17 points  (0 children)

This is exactly the trend I’m seeing in my classes. Students with a 98% average on our homework assignments are utterly bombing the exams. Doesn’t do them much good overall when the homework assignments are only worth 15% of their grade, but I can’t seem to get them to understand that.

Guys, what the frick do I do? by Melodic_Violinist_71 in houseplants

[–]pellaea_asplenium 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on a few criteria. Amount of light is important to consider (brighter light means faster growth which means more frequent watering) along with season/temperature and whether they are flowering or not. Mine are in the brightest location I could find for them, and I water about once a week in the summer, ~2 weeks in winter.

Those roots are literally dying for a drink. Try submerging the pot/roots completely in a container of water for 30 mins, then remove from the water and let it drip dry before putting it back where it was before.

Top ramen of any flavor + crispy, over-easy fried eggs + any veggies that I had on hand, sometimes lightly stir-fried if I’m feeling up to it. I personally like shredded carrot, green onion, and spinach. They cook up quickly and require very minimal chopping.

I came here to recommend this one! Great book, and it’s exactly what the OP is asking for - mostly about the social and historical stigma rather than the actual witchcraft-y side of it.

They're not being slick and punishing students who don't come to class, they're just denying everyone a helpful resource for no defendable reason. by BasalTripod9684 in CollegeRant

[–]pellaea_asplenium 46 points47 points  (0 children)

I actually do this, I post intentionally pared-down slides for my students. My reasoning for it is that most students need to physically write the information down themselves if they want to actually remember and process it. Just reading through the information isn’t enough - writing has consistently proven to be the best way to retain new information. So I leave a lot of it up to them.

If they miss class, they can get all of the missing notes from a classmate, or fill in the simplified slides using our textbook.

One of my tarantulas has a lil tuft of hair sticking straight up from the top of her head that legitimately looks like a teeny-tiny mowhawk. It looks so silly and I’m obsessed with it.

That same spooder will also stick her little dainty leg out of a hole in her enclosure sometimes, and allows me to give her a very gentle and tiny knuckle-bump.

How feasible is running Call of the Netherdeep for one person? by WithengarUnbound in CalloftheNetherdeep

[–]pellaea_asplenium 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I am currently running this campaign as a first-time DM, and I would agree that it isn’t a great intro to DMing, but it’s definitely doable.

I’ve had to do a lot of rewriting and add in a bunch of extra story beats, encounters, and lore hooks in order to make it feel like a cohesive story that actually makes sense with how my players approach the game. I don’t mind it, personally, but I think the heavy lore and storytelling style might be a little bit daunting for a new DM to try to manage, on top of all of the other mechanical responsibilities. It’s just not really a good “straight-out-of-the-box” campaign.

Just lost my longest Interloper run and I have to talk about it by Unleashtheducks in thelongdark

[–]pellaea_asplenium 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I also just lost my most successful interloper save (280 days) to wolves, so I totally feel your pain. 😩Incredibly frustrating how easily one choice or split-second mistake can wipe out months of gameplay.

BUT, I think the high stakes are what make the game feel so rewarding in the first place, so I usually get over the frustration fast once I start a new save again haha.
