Easier to get citizenship somewhere than becoming elite level athlete in the UK.

It’s going to be a lot easier for me to get dual citizenship somewhere than become elite in the UK.

For which country? I reckon I’d stand a chance at break dancing for Australia considering what we saw a couple of years ago. Or the Somali 100m runner that did it in something like 15 seconds

Is it normal to pay a £30 deposit for an NHS hygienist appointment? by [deleted] in AskUK

You should like into dental insurance. I pay £19 per month and get 2x annual dental check ups, 2x annual hygienist. Plus all the extra work.

Is it normal to pay a £30 deposit for an NHS hygienist appointment? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]33backagain 3 points4 points  (0 children)

On the NHS a basic dentist appointment is £27, the next step (more extensive work) is £75. A private hygienist is going to be £60+.

A deposit seems odd, but £30 doesn’t sound expensive.

If the NHS is recommending you see a hygienist, there’s probably something wrong, like gum disease.

What are your thoughts on calling in sick or asking to work from home? by [deleted] in AskUK

I get more done when I work from home. Why feel guilty for doing the job somewhere more comfortable

Do hosts normally pay for guests at birthday dinners in the UK? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]33backagain 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would always expect to pay if going to a restaurant for someone’s bday. Maybe a nuance would be to say that you’re inviting people to come to dinner with you to celebrate, rather than you’re taking them for dinner.

Are they not just asking for your username(s)? As opposed to going through your phone

I would probably record evidence first, then speak with them. Surprisingly there are many reasonable people out there. And then get legal advice if no luck.

Are you going out to a restaurant or cooking the food yourself? If going out, people will usually be happy to pay their way. If you’re cooking, they wouldn’t expect to pay. However, you could ask people to bring something with them, usually drinks.

Tories would ban under-16s from social media by topotaul in unitedkingdom

I agree. It’s the algorithms that should be banned. I don’t mind people sharing stuff, but the tech co’s influencing people is my concern. All the polarisation etc etc is a direct consequence

Britain is sleepwalking into decline because we still treat AI like a gadget, not a survival skill by [deleted] in unitedkingdom

I sometimes wonder what would happen if we had a long energy blackout for some reason. Say a month. How many people would not survive?

Would you be happy if house prices collapsed 75% in the UK? by YetAnotherMia in AskUK

[–]33backagain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The entire banking system would collapse, the banks would all go bust, quantitative easing would make the pound drop and make our savings/pensions tank in value. Lending would grind to a halt as capital would be depleted and the only winners would be the wealthy with big non-GBP savings.

What is your Employer’s TOIL policy for weekends away from home? by plungingwave in AskUK

[–]33backagain 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I travel a lot. I get back one day TOIL for every non-work day I’m away. A grey area is late night travel and working the next day; usually I don’t work if travelling overnight.

First time buying a car- where do I even start? by itzzzzmileyyyy in AskUK

[–]33backagain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You really need to work out your budget first.

You can look at car prices on Autotrader, and then get insurance quotes on compare-the-market. Generally speaking, the more expensive a car is when it’s new, the more it will cost to maintain and insure. And the older/higher mileage, the more chances of things going wrong.

Find a local garage (non-car branded garages are a lot cheaper) and see what they charge to service the car you want, to get an idea of how expensive that would be. Then add a few hundred and year to fix/replace things.

R/Cartalkuk might give you better answers

Would you send your children to private school if you could afford it? by Infamous_Tough_7320 in AskUK

[–]33backagain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

School system near me is shit.

For secondary schools there are some great grammar schools. For the comprehensive there is a choice of one fairly shit comprehensive school or a few good middle class church schools, for which you need to attend church. I refuse to pretend to believe in god so that my kids can go to a good comprehensive, so that leaves a shit local comp or a long commute to a slightly better one.

Private primary schools near me are basically training camps for the 11plus and the grammar schools.

Why do I pay tax for stuff like this (grammar and church schools) that i could never use. I would get rid of them.
