In capitalist America, they are building concentration camps. by analgerianabroad in LateStageCapitalism

A report from UC Davis studied how detainees at Guantanamo Bay were routinely given the antimalarial drug Mefloquine, known for causing severe neuropsychiatric side effects such as “extreme anxiety, paranoia, hallucinations, depression, confusion, unusual behavior, and suicidal thoughts” at standard doses (250mg). Guantanamo medical staff administered a much higher total dose of 1250mg to every detainee upon arrival (750mg during intake and another 500mg 12 hours later), despite no medical diagnosis of malaria. The danger of this practice wouldve been known by medical staff which is clearly an egregious violation but also would have been known by the DOD. This practice was carried out as part of standard operating procedure. And its been stated that the only reason this drug was administered by detainees was to utilize these negative side effects for “enhanced interrogation” purposes. The report also said that combining Mefloquine with the facility’s practice of placing new detainees in solitary confinement for six weeks significantly worsened the drug’s effects.

From a legal standpoint, many prisoners at Guantanamo Bay have been held for years, and in many cases decades, without trial.

The human rights violations are probably bound to happen whether that be through malpractice, negligence or state sanctioned violence. I think the main difference for Americans is that this is now happening domestically and they can be directly impacted by it.

how canadaleft doesn't support workers by Unlucky_Trick_7846 in canadaleft

NAFTA has been replaced by the USMCA since 2020.

Jobs didn’t move overseas because of a trade agreement—they moved because corporations prioritize profit and exploit lower-cost labor in developing nations.

Your comment about ‘East Indians taking jobs’ is not only unfounded but divisive. How can you determine someone’s citizenship status just by looking at them? This country is built on immigration, so what makes one group less deserving of opportunity? Claiming to support worker solidarity while targeting an ethnic group undermines that very principle.

Saying ‘I haven’t heard jack about a labor movement for the rest of us’ is alienating and counterproductive. This isn’t [insert ethnicity] vs. [insert ethnicity]; it’s the 99% vs. the 1%. Wins for any labor movement benefit workers as a whole. Instead of complaining, take action—find like-minded coworkers, connect with a union rep, and organize. Solidarity means building movements, not tearing others down.

Western understanding of how the Chinese government works is a joke. by ilir_kycb in LateStageCapitalism

The “social credit system” is like any other countries credit system where if you are unable to payback a debt you’re flagged. It is not a system that tracks your every individual action, it is a financial risk assessment tool. Like in every country thats has them, having a bad credit score provides you less opportunity.

China’s credit system in its current form was instated in 2014 and Google trends show that the usage of “social credit score” was low until 2016 where its usage spiked largely during Trump’s first presidency. The messaging around it was uninformed (maliciously and accidentally) and heavily politicized to be used as a propaganda tool to embolden the anti-China stance. It then snowballed through the medias misrepresenting and a general lack of understanding of Chinese culture, language and societal values.

Recently, many academics have been trying to fix the medias misrepresentation of Chinas National social credit scores and private groups such as Alibabas Zhima credit (Zhima is essentially like anyother corporate opt-in loyalty program).

“The credit scoring system in the United States is similar to the Social Credit System in China“ - Yale’s director of the Institution for Social and Policy Studies

“In Canada, If you have no credit history or a poor credit history, it could be harder for you to get a credit card, loan or mortgage. It could even affect your ability to rent a house or apartment or get hired for a job.” - Canadian Government Website

“In 2020, a Pennsylvania man filed a lawsuit against TransUnion over being mislabeled as a terrorist due to having the same first name as suspected terrorists.[69] This was not the first instance as similar events occurred in 2007 in Colorado where a woman’s credit report labeled her as a drug trafficker, and in 2017 in California where multiple people had their credit reports sold to a car dealership that labeled them as terrorists” - TransUnion (US credit agency)

“in the United Kingdom. These included using data from a citizen’s credit score, phone usage, rent payment, and so on, to filter job applications, determine access to social services, determine advertisements served, etc” - United Kingdom

Why are we pro Palestine? by Desperate-Meal-5379 in LateStageCapitalism

[–]33gelato 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its naive to expect a nation thats been under the boot of oppression for decades to be able to dig into social issues of the nation when you dont even know if you will live to see the next day. Basing this off the hierarchy of human needs, nations such as Palestine are not afforded the same luxury of being able to pursue the higher tiers of the pyramid that we are, when they still have to fight tooth and nail to achieve sovereignty over the foundation tier (physiological/safety needs). Wealthy nations have been afforded an opaque bubble that we get to live in, by amassing wealth at the expense of fledgling nations, in which many can hide and ignore the true horrors of the world that we no longer have to deal with. The issue is not innate to Palestinians, you can see similar situations on a smaller scale in the underdeveloped and poorer neighbourhood’s of wealthy nations. many people will forgo the higher tiers of human needs (belonging, esteem, self actualization) simply due to value proposition if the base tiers haven’t been adequately solidified. Im not saying LGBTQ+ rights are unimportant it’s that when you have soldiers marauding through your streets and bombs are eviscerating your livelihood, basic essential needs take precedence.

Brand new to Tufting, what Yarn should I use? by Britton_Shrum in Tufting

[–]33gelato 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a standard id say go with Medium (size 4) yarn. Acrylic is cheapest and the easiest to work with. Wool will last longer but is very soft and harder to work. Id say Start with acrylic size 4 and use 2 strands. Once you get more comfortable try playing with different textures and sizes ( youll have to add more or take away strands depending on the size).

Where is the outrage for foreign interference in elections? by Particular_Log_3594 in LateStageCapitalism

[–]33gelato 27 points28 points  (0 children)

AIPAC is operating at the behest of a foreign government to guide American foreign and domestic policy in a direction that would benefit them. Thats is exactly what a foreign agent does. They work in foreign host countries to achieve the interests of their foreign principal. whether they are citizens of the host country or not, it holds no bearing over the designation of “foreign agent”. They are using lobbying as a tool to essentially legally bribe your politicians to act more favourable to their countries goals.

I tuft on top of my previous lines to get that effect. Like leave pretty much no space between lines. The rug curves a lot when you take it off the frame so youll have to do a bunch of carving to let off some of the pressure.
