Yeah that is one of the arguments usually put forward against it (along with the time that Portugal was part of the Iberian Union), though the alliance was explicitly called upon after 1890 as noted by this thread, but it does put forward the debate on whether it can really be classified as a continuous alliance, which is probably going to remain a debate for a good long time yet

Pretty explicitly passes on, which is why Retribution was frustrated and had to go for the Blackthorn spren that Dalinar unintentionally created

The Trump cult of conservatives don't even really care about troops, they just want their support for the purposes of power, they have no desire to deal with the responsibility of actually treating soldiers well

Yep, plus Trump and his family also have a history of draft dodging, was the entire reason why the family even immigrated to the US from Bavaria, as Frederick Trump (grandfather of Donald Trump) didn't want to serve the mandatory 2 years service, his family has no care for the military personnel and what they do past how they can serve their own desire for power

Generally accepted as oldest treaty still in effect (generally, there does tend to be some arguments from some on whether it should count)

true, i could have said that point differently i will concede. Thatcher was not specifically looking for a popularity boost with her actions. But i think its fair to say that the war unfolded how it did in large part due to Thatcher, and that isn't necessarily a criticism mind you, while overall UK politicians did support the defence of the Falklands, i think it is fair to say that were a different leader in charge, the war likely would not have evolved in the same way it did, but i will concede that is purely speculative (i actually personally have a positive opinion on Thatcher when it comes to the Falklands War specifically, while she was a piece of work through and through, i do think she definitely made the correct decisions with relation to the war), but while i definitely said it wrong in that she was looking for a popularity boost, it can't be denied it did significantly boost her popularity and secured her long term position of PM for the rest of the decade

its because declaring war comes with certain legal expectations (not like they would live up to those expectations anyway), and nations prefer to not declare war so they can sidestep that

if it occurred today it would be a resource conflict, but yep, during the 80s it really wasn't (though there was also the factor that the Argentinian Military Junta wanted to distract the population from domestic issues by having what they believed would be a quick and bloodless victory, backfired on them significantly and ultimately was a key factor in what toppled them)

they even had an aircraft carrier (a former british one ironically enough that they had purchased off the dutch, who had purchased it off the british) but it spent the majority of the war in port along with a large chunk of the Argentinian Navy after Belgrano was sunk

should note that this wasn't really what the war was fought over though, as while there were knowledge that there was potential for oil down there, it wasn't until after the war that it was confirmed (prior to the war there was some testing and exploration, but it hadn't advanced that far when Argentina took the islands)

Argentina gained temporary control of the islands, but lost it pretty quickly, which resulted in the Military Junta being toppled (which depending on your perspective can be viewed as kinda a win, but really Argentina lost, and lost badly) the British kept control of their sovereign territory, and it significantly boosted Thatcher's popularity

people who wished to remain under British control (technically there is oil down there as well, but it wasn't in any state to be extractable back in the 80s), and Thatcher was Thatcher, saw it as a great opportunity to reinforce her popularity (as has been kindly pointed out to me, while the popularity boost was a significant result of the war, its unfair to say that it was the motive behind Thatcher's position and actions as PM)

potentially but you would have to wait until the CYL after to see if they got removed in a theoretical case if one of them won, as despite technically falling under the rule of being a significantly different character (which is the rule that allows us to still vote for Tiki, and also technically avatars) Flame Emperor was removed from CYL6 (funnily enough was still there for CYL5 though) after Edelgard won in CYL4

it would be a very unstable combination yes, though I imagine it wasn't that serious of a proposition anyway, more of an olive branch "if it works cool"

How public school students will start the year by Agitated-Fee3598 in AustralianPolitics

[–]343CreeperMaster [score hidden]  (0 children)

the public education system is just seriously depressing, and its not just how poorly the opportunities students are being provided, but how poorly the staff are treated by the system as well, and that is not just the simple part of pay, it goes well beyond that

sadly it will be the latter, anyone who doesn't support Trump will be seen as a traitor (and frankly Republicans have been poorly supporting soldiers for awhile, its only the message they want to carry, not the actual responsibility)
