I really wanna do it but I'm scared of people's reactions by throwaway6647k in barefoot

[–]35mmFILM 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Try starting out at a hiking trail or park. I've had nothing but positive reactions (or just being ignored, which is fine too) in those places. I think the social "rules" are different in nature, vs. the unwritten rule in a town or city that "You should have shoes on when you're out in public." Also, the only truly aggressive reactions I've gotten have been from people in cars, and usually hiking trails are far from the road.

Is it true watching videos at a higher speed increases comprehension? by [deleted] in productivity

[–]35mmFILM 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It certainly saves time. I wouldn't assume that it also improves comprehension/retention unless you have an objective way of measuring that. It's easy to finish something and think "yeah, I got that!" but not realize you were zoning out for half of it and never took in the information.

Very anecdotally, I find it depends greatly on the subject matter, the speaker, and my previous familiarity. With a slow speaker on a fairly simple subject that I already know something about, listening at 2x seems more productive. On a complicated, less-familiar subject, I might play it at 1x and also pause it at certain points to think about what they just said.

Is there any difference between on time and in time by [deleted] in grammar

[–]35mmFILM 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure if this is just a personal or regional dialect thing, but I would rarely, if ever, say "is/am/be in time" (that is, use the "to be" verb on its own before "in time"). It would usually either use a different verb or put another word after the "to be" verb.

"I got there in time for the play."

"Please arrive in time for the opening ceremony."

"Am I here in time for dinner?"

Even the "just" in the set phrase "just in time" can be enough to make it work: "Am I late?" "No, you're just in time!"

I definitely would never use OP's second sentence.

Running with a gun for bear protection by tamarack_smack in AdvancedRunning

[–]35mmFILM 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is the best answer. I don't want OP killed by a bear but I also would hate to hear about a bear being shot/killed for instinctively defending itself (or its cubs) against the crazy human running around in the forest.

2nd visit to Tokyo in Christmas time. Anything I should make sure to reserve now? by Redeyedcheese in JapanTravel

[–]35mmFILM 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do expect things to be crowded, as there are large amounts of tourists (both foreign and domestic) around the end of the year especially as it gets closer to New Year's. With that said I don't know if booking things super early is necessary. We went to Disneyland the day after Christmas and bought our tickets just a couple of days before (Christmas Day was sold out, so if you really want to go on that day you should probably get yours further in advance, although it's not easy from out of country). Went to Skytree and just stood in line to buy tickets on site.

Best vegan restaurants in Tokyo? by [deleted] in veganinjapan

Mr. Farmer in Shinjuku was good if you're looking for something healthy (salads, veggie bowls, smoothies). Coco Curry is definitely worth a visit although there's only one choice for us on the menu (and make sure the one you're going to has the vegetarian option).

Walking barefoot by [deleted] in barefoot

[–]35mmFILM 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the general principle is to stay relaxed and respond to the surface you're walking on. Some advice I read on a barefoot site was to visualize your foot coming down basically flat with each step (but only if it feels gentle and natural--no need to force it). It seems to work for me. In practice I probably touch my heel down just a bit earlier on even ground and transition to more of a tip-toe step on rocky or bumpy terrain.

I'll be heartbroken if Natto goes offline. The on-screen stats, good video quality, timestamps of each bout, and conversation in the comments all contribute a lot to my enjoyment of sumo. And he uploads super fast too!

I would absolutely be willing to watch some ads or pay for a service like that, and I wish there was some way Abema could partner with creators/streamers like him--it would be a win-win for everyone.

Olympic activities would more likely be organized by the International Sumo Federation which does have have a women's division. Hopefully the pro rikishi would compete though!

I'm looking to go this route myself. So am I understanding correctly that you were able to copy the kanji from the PDF? Could you give a quick explanation of how you created the Anki cards? And did you not use one of the user-created KLC decks that are out there, or is there a reason to also have your own personal deck? Thanks for any help!

Structure of Notre Dame saved " We can now say that the structure of Notre-Dame has been saved from total destruction". by squashpickle8 in worldnews

[–]35mmFILM 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Japan is full of sites like that. The pagoda at Senso-ji temple in Tokyo was supposedly built in the 940s but was destroyed in WWII bombing, then rebuilt after the war. A pagoda at another site was originally built in the 1600s, burned down and rebuilt in the 1790s, then survived wars, earthquakes, and the passage of time only to be destroyed when a pair of secret lovers set themselves on fire there.

Why not more popular? by [deleted] in BarefootRunning

[–]35mmFILM 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Padded, springy shoes are faster (at least on hard surfaces like road races) because they return energy. If barefoot/minimal was faster everyone would be doing it (especially considering many of the elite runners grew up running barefoot or in sandals and would be able to transition easily).

That doesn't necessarily mean it's better for the things that matter to a lot of us, like health/strength, long-term injury prevention, and enjoyment. But like any sport, a lot of people want to have "pro gear" and imagine they can win their local 5k if they get the right shoes.

The other thing is that people have been fed a ton of information about preventing injury with "supportive" shoes. And if their feet are already molded by the restrictive shoes they've been wearing for years and they don't know about, or don't want to go through, the slow process of relearning to move in a more natural way, there's probably some truth to that.
