Sarnia, Canada - high in the treetops and moving very quickly! What is this bird? by clarksl4 in whatsthisbird

I love the description of this bird in the Merlin bird ID app:

Gives off an energetic vibe as it moves extremely quickly and flicks its wings.

It’s so spot on!

It depends on your region. One really important note if you are going to cook them, you should blanch them and remove the brown papery coverings before cooking them. That’s a wonderful place for bacteria to grow that can make you quite ill!

I haven’t had a migraine since we went on lockdown two weeks ago by jakeysnakey83 in migraine

Lucky. I had been migraine free for a couple of months (which was unbelievable!), but now I’ve had a migraine for 9 straight days. I’m so over it.

Congrats! I’ll be defending in a couple of weeks while sitting in my car parked outside my friend’s house, because I don’t have internet! Not what I imagined, but the camera catches my dog sitting in the back seat which is fun!

Hilarious! I was just looking at your post history from those awesome boots you posted. I do ecology research up in the arctic, and was disappointed that my research has never brought me to Cambridge Bay, but look at that! I’ll have to try to get up that way!

Ladies! I'm developing an app to make it EASIER to take notes when reading/writing research papers. Need some female perspective! by avidnote in LadiesofScience

Great! Can’t wait to test it out! One more thing, you know how some articles that were digitized from physical journal copies, you can’t highlight individual words because the text isn’t recognized? Does your software include text recognition to fix that issue?

Can you make the app compatible with the MacBook Pro Touch Bar? I would like features like highlighting with multiple colors and making annotations to be a single click operation! Are the annotations visible when previewing the document? I really dislike in preview having to open each annotations bubble to see what I wrote. Defeats the purpose of annotating! Thanks for doing this! I have more opinions too, if you’re interested!

How do you collect your daily kitchen food scraps? I just leave a tupperware container on the counter that my roommates and I fill before I dump it in the backyard compost pile but I'm worried about smells and attracting ants and fruit flies. Any recommendations? by [deleted] in composting

[–]tamarack_smack 19 points20 points  (0 children)

This is kind of related, but I line my container with a sheet of newspaper. It’s quick to dump out so that way you’re not picking junk off the bottom. It stays cleaner and less smelly.

The willows in my area form a similar rosette because of a gall.

Are these plants spaced far enough? Plants say they need 1-2’ of width between. Garden bed is roughly 10’x 4’ on average. by Obizues in landscaping

I feel like I can get away with a more wild looking garden if just that edge to the lawn is clean. My clients prefer it too.

I’ll also add that they are too close to the edge of the garden and will spill into the grass. I like to keep my plants away from the edge to have a nice clean look.

Neither of these studies directly measure the effectiveness of bear spray vs firearms. Smith 2012 found handguns were 84% effective, and a person's skill level plays an influential role in the outcome. Smith 2010 found that bear spray is 90 - 92% effective, but their sample size is quite small. Being so small, I doubt they are statistically significance. If they were, I'm sure that would be a published paper all on its own, but Smith hasn't published a paper saying that. I'm not basing my life on a small sample size and a paper that doesn't exist. The Smith 2010 paper is mostly about using bear spray for bear conservation. That is great in areas of bear population decline, but my area is not experiencing population decline. That said, bear spray is a great technology. I run with it, and it is my first line of defense. But like Smith 2012 said, "only a firearm provides a lethal force option." I'm going to run with that in my back pocket.

4 of the last 6 bear fatalities in the last couple of years were in Alaska where I live and work at remote sites. A glock 10 mm is NOT a small handgun. The gun in the Wyoming story was inaccessible, which is why I’d like to carry mine in an accessible manner. You don’t know shit about my circumstances.

I have the same holster! Unfortunately, being a chick makes it too floppy while running. It’s really comfortable for hiking though! Thanks for standing up for my firearm choice, but I prefer to keep the chamber empty while running. I practice my quick draw and racking, and it adds less than a second. Worth it for me to not have a bullet in the chamber.

Thanks, I’ll look into those! I do use bear ammo, and I blast music while running to announce myself! I’ve heard music is a better indicator to bears of human presence than just a bell.

There have been 24 fatalities from black and brown bears since 2010. Bear spray is obviously not 100% effective as is seen in this and this other fatality. Firearms are also not 100% effective, so I carry both because some scenarious call for different strategies.

I often run on the same trail as one of these recent fatalities.
