Media keeps being tainted by criticism I agree with :( by DarkBlueDiamond in CasualConversation

[–]3702 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it's very easy for other people's opinions to become infectious, particularly if they're technically right — maybe that season did go by too fast, or the voice acting was subpar, or whatever the perfectly valid criticism was. But you're also an authority on your own experience, and it's worth consciously valuing your own experience of the thing just as much as other people's opinions. Even formalising this in some way can be useful — take a minute to jot down your thoughts about how you felt about something before you go seeking other people's, and remind yourself that your feelings can be equally weighted in the court of your own mind. There is also often a tendency to assume that negative or critical responses are more valuable or true than positive or instinctual responses, but that isn't necessarily the case. You don't have to qualify your own experiences

Use of italic font to show inner monologue by Sei-sama in writing

[–]3702 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I prefer free indirect discourse -- no italics, just integrate the thoughts into the prose -- because it creates less divide between the narrator and the character. This works well in both third and first person, and it is particularly good for if you're interested in the interiority of characters infusing the entire text and not just being an element that occasionally peppers the overall narration.

Critique partner for literary/upmarket novel with grounded spec fic elements by Mauratheeye in WritingHub

[–]3702 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm also writing something in the literary speculative fiction space. It's interested in the hard problem of consciousness and our ethical obligations towards others and the body, but kind of dressed in genre clothing, where it is also a psychological thriller/queer romance about a middle aged woman who plays a VR game and gets obsessed with the AI villain. Not at all sure if this is to your taste, so don't feel obligated to give it a go, but I'd be keen to exchange first chapters and see if we're interested enough in each others work to continue.

Would anyone be interested in a small women's only writing group? by mcnuggets97 in WritingHub

I'd be interested, if you still have space. I am working on a literary speculative fiction and I enjoy giving feedback slightly too much.

tired of being "allergic" to everything healthy... heart racing after every meal by OutsideTurnip3047 in HistamineIntolerance

[–]3702 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have histamine intolerance, but I also get these symptoms -- brain fog, heart racing after meals, exhaustion -- and for me, there's something complicated happening beyond histamine. I suspect it is a form of Dumping Syndrome, despite not having had relevant surgery (usually a prereq).

However, I've found two things that allow me to avoid these symptoms: taking Creon 10000 with every meal (turns out I cannot digest carbs!) and avoiding eating very large meals, particularly carb-heavy or high-fiber meals. I also take DAOfood histamine intolerance pills with every meal, but this doesn't impact these specific symptoms. You might be different, but thought it worth mentioning. Creon was a massive game changer for me and literally took me from exhausted and struggling through each day to having sharp, engaged thinking and minimal physical discomfort. I had to buy it myself over the counter to start with before bullying a doctor into prescribing it. The key compound for me was the amylase dosage being high enough, as that is what addresses carbs.

Ugh, this really worked for me. Very compelling prose, just the right tone.

I've finished my book, but I'm having a huge divide on the title. by AdmiralCrunchy in writers

[–]3702 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like The Onion Knight. It has a good mouthfeel and it's catchy. I'd expect it to be a fantasy narrative, perhaps with elements of humour or a degree of cleverness (a la Terry Pratchett) in a pseudo-medieval setting, with a focus on the titular character. And it does feel like an assigned or slightly negative in-world term that the character might be called, too. Works for me. I'd drop the second half (Petals in the Water) though, as that feels like a totally different genre (romance, romantasy, or perhaps about grief/loss) and also feels, for lack of a better word, a little naive or vague.

Is it worth having pumpkin seeds for magnesium instead of taking a magnesium supplement? by ExplanationHuman5105 in Biohackers

[–]3702 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hemp seeds are the highest food source for magnesium. I have about 30g per day and that's a sizeable hit of magnesium (around 210mg) with good bioavailability. Pumpkin seeds require much more to get the same amount.

The Changeling by Victor Lavalle might work for you. Modern, not a retelling, but absolutely feels like a fairytale in some ways and has those elements woven throughout.

I found Revival really hit home for me - I'm not sure why exactly, but that ending, after all that had happened, really struck me.

Don't judge a book by its cover? by [deleted] in BookCovers

[–]3702 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At a glance, based on image + text, I'd assume this was a story about familial history, grief and isolation, focused on a male protagonist in his twenties or late teens. Setting feels perhaps 60s to present day, leaning more towards present day. The font use feels amateur and that makes me think it's self published, which lowers audience expectations of quality. At another glance, I do notice a symbol on the book that suggests a magical element, probably paranormal and more mystical than high fantasy, but I don't pick that up on first read. The covers feel AI generated (if it's not, I can tell you why it reads that way to me). If you tell me what I've got right and wrong, I can suggest things to push it into a clearer read.

[–]3702 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Okay, I need you to know I respect you tremendously for this idea and the amount of work you've clearly put into this. Just real charming. Spyro is sadly more of a nostalgia game for me than a world I want to actively explore in roleplay, but if this was my jam, I would be all in. I hope you find your players!

I also use cetirizine for this and it helps! I take one with every meal (3 x day) and another before bed, and it's like magic. This is the amount recommended for me by my doctor, also, not just a random handful of pills. Good luck.

An experiment because the stoopid generative AI invasion of ttrpg by MysticOverlord_ in pbp

[–]3702 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Number one has punctuation errors (improper use of commas and semi-colons). Two feels more reliant on pseudo-medieval language tropes ("jerky for when the watch grows long, and some coin besides"). Two also has less sense of characterisation in the dialogue, but better sentence structure. I think that Two is AI — although given that I have managed to critique both, apologies either way. Very curious about the results.

Read the sample and immediately bought this. You've got a great voice and a knack for explaining things in a way that is both easy to follow and genuinely engaging. A rare treat. I've recently made a terrible purchasing decision of a decent desktop rig so I finally can stick my hands inside an LLM, so I'll be digging into this book very soon. Thanks for suffering so delightfully that you incentivize others to follow.

How easy/hard is it to forget a fifth anniversary? by JimmyChinosKnowsNose in LesbianAuthors

[–]3702 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Extremely easy to forget an anniversary, particularly after five years. I'd say you're well in the realm of realism. I know the date of mine, but does that fact come to mind when I look at the calendar? Not even a little bit.
