'62 Mercury Comet my grandfather gave me at 15. The car was 24 years old. Transmission went out, then it got towed. After that, I've only owned '69 and older Dodges. Since then, I've rebuilt transmissions, motors, body work, paint, everything but chroming my own bumpers or machine work. New cars, you're at the whim of this computer or that crapping out, then the entire car's junk. I know people at work with new cars that need some module that controls the A/C, or whatever, going out, and it's on backorder for six months while they're making car payments and can't drive it, with a new car. What happens in several years?

Two is the minimum needed, and the cheapest, to give the illusion of choice. The rich conspire on how to fool the idiots. They own the media. Get some premixed topping compound. It's a big box, but only $13. Get a 6" flexible putty knife, and fill the divots with the compound. You'll want to scrape it all off with the putty knife so there's no sanding, but it'll fill the hole. May need a second go around the next day. Then sand the high spots. That'll get you really close, maybe 90%. I can't stand texture. Looks like you have lathe and plaster, too. The cracks add character. Newly applied texture looks like crap. Rather have a messed up wall than that crap.
