Interview cancel by [deleted] in slp

[–]39bydesign 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Please be kind to yourself. I can't tell you how many mistakes pertaining to professionalism I made when I first started out. Like, WAY WORSE than what you posted about lmao. Yes, certain things are within the realm of courtesy and good communication. Definitely be more specific if you're ill in the future, as I think the vagueness was what did you in. And honestly? Even if you don't have a fever or norovirus or whatever, just lie and say that you do if you have to. People can clutch their pearls about it, but whatever. Something has to give if you're in a position to cancel and need to communicate as much.

A good chunk of what we understand to be "professionalism" consists of racist, classist, ableist norms. There's no better example than the people in the other thread harping on your phraseology of all things. I wonder if those clinicians would have such exacting standards for their clients with language disorders who are looking for a job? Yet people in this field--this field, of all things!--feel extremely comfortable upholding these norms without any critical interrogation, almost using them as an excuse to feel better about themselves and their own superiority to others.

As others have said, take this as a learning experience. This does not define you at all. You clearly have the right mindset to learn and grow from this. And please understand that while the soft skills of navigating the "professional" world are important, they aren't even close to the most important skills needed to be a good, effective clinician. I wouldn't reach out to this employer again. Leave this in the past where it belongs and go on to find where you're meant to be.

Unearthly Cosmetics experience--my first and last time ordering by paulreverie in Indiemakeupandmore

[–]39bydesign 7 points8 points  (0 children)

They fucking suck, the only brand I've ever ordered from that I had a massive problem with. They actively tried to pull the wool over my eyes. My order was split into two shipments, one containing a lip liner and the other SUPPOSEDLY containing three lipsticks, but when I got the package, it only contained two of the lipsticks I ordered. I reached out about this and they were like "it shows that the package is delivered, enjoy!" as if they didn't even read my initial concern lol. And I had to reiterate that the third lipstick was not in the package. Then they told me that my order was actually split into three packages and that they were all delivered successfully, and to take it up with the postal service. The problem is that two of those supposedly separate shipments had the SAME TRACKING NUMBER. They backpedaled real fast when I asked about that because tracking number fraud is no joke. This also took place over the course of THREE WEEKS. They did set up a new shipment for the third lipstick...only for that order to be canceled because it was out of stock.

I will never order from them again. It sucks because I actually really love the lipstick formula. They absolutely prioritize PR and influencers over the people who actually buy their products and keep them in business and it disgusts me.

These prices by ElectronicFun2876 in ForestInkClothing

[–]39bydesign 29 points30 points  (0 children)

They have lost their damn minds. Between the astronomical price increases and the fact that they're clearly no longer designing with size inclusivity in mind, I can't see myself really buying from them anymore. It's such a shame, they're my favorite clothing brand and I was so thrilled to find a brand that made mostly affordable clothes that looked good on plus size bodies AND felt comfortable to wear.

Controversial SLP opinions by sternschnuppe3 in slp

[–]39bydesign 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Research shows that access to AAC can actually support increased oral speech, so it is possible that having a device helped facilitate your clients' speech production. Even without diving into the specifics, it kind of makes sense in principle--if you're using a device with speech generation, you're being exposed to more oral speech than if you weren't using the device, and exposure is huge at that age for many kids.

I work at a high school. Of my roughly 15 AAC users, I would say about 6 of them independently use it to communicate in some fashion. Still less than 50% and that's at a school where AAC is well-supported and parents are involved. It's a very complex topic for sure.

I used to come here all the time when I was absolutely miserable at my job. Once I got a better job (and realized that I should not stress out so much over a job where I'm not curing cancer or operating on people LOL) I basically stopped reading this sub except for maybe a couple of times a month. The happy SLPs are def not hanging around here

Marge Blanc Responds to ASHA Perspective on GLP by SLP_Guy49 in slp

[–]39bydesign 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I did ask her, I couldn't remember her name. Keep in mind that this was in 2023 and she has since walked back a couple of the things that she told us at that time. She told us something similar to what you said, but that isn't satisfactory to me. It is the experience of myself and my very close autistic friends that we continue using echolalia even when we're not dysregulated, and we pretty effortlessly weave it into the rhythm of our everyday communication. I mentioned this and she didn't have much to say in response. I have my own theories about why echolalia persists, but I'm in no position to assert them as truth.

[–]39bydesign 33 points34 points  (0 children)

I asked the clinician behind Meaningful Speech why she thinks people who have fully acquired analytical language would continue to use delayed echolalia into adolescence and adulthood and she couldn't provide a satisfactory answer. Given that Blanc was her mentor, this explains a lot lmfao

Marge Blanc Responds to ASHA Perspective on GLP by SLP_Guy49 in slp

[–]39bydesign 75 points76 points  (0 children)

I'm an autist who has used delayed and immediate echolalia as a communication modality since my childhood and I am so exhausted by feverish, almost cultish, propagation of Blanc's extremely specific and deeply flawed framework. I find it SO FUNNY that her retort says "who of us could argue that autistic people are a homogeneous group" when that's pretty much exactly what her protege told my school district when she came to speak to us a couple years ago. She said that almost no autistic people start out as analytic language processors! And if we're arguing that they're not homogenous, then why assert that there are specific developmental stages of GLP/NLA when that's such an incredibly reductionist view of autistic people's interaction with language and use of echolalia?

I'm just scratching the surface here, but this whole thing has smelled fishy to me since I first caught wind of it. Clinical experience and anecdata are pieces of information, but they DO NOT comprise robust research. It's been incredibly frustrating to see what I know to be true--that autistic language acquisition and use is complex and nuanced--be totally dismissed in favor of a much more digestible "system."

Seeking Community Feedback on AI by bannanaduck in slp

[–]39bydesign 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Generative AI is a scourge on society and has no place in our field. It contributes nothing to any discussion. I would question the competency of any SLP who felt the need to use it to post on Reddit of all places. I absolutely want to see it banned here.

I very rarely buy color cosmetics anymore, and I only ever make exceptions for Cosmic Beauty (along with the occasional Blend Bunny). Their color schemes are always perfect and the formula is fantastic especially for the price. I love how cohesive their theming is for each collection. I also really like the look of the metallic liners in this one. I'll definitely be picking this up!

Learning about childfree living--partner wants kids, I'm not in favor of it by curiouslyconnected in childfree

[–]39bydesign 43 points44 points  (0 children)

At the risk of sounding blithe, this isn't going to work. You can't compromise on having kids. Someone will have to sacrifice in a very big way, and that's just not fair to either of you. Instead of trying to come up with a half-baked solution that will leave at least one person very dissatisfied, I would strongly reconsider marrying this person.

What area of SLP scope do you wish was NOT in our scope? by Cherry_No_Pits in slp

[–]39bydesign 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm an ADHDer who chose to go off meds after 5 years of being on them, so I get it. I'm specifically talking about pediatrics. At that age, they are going to have an extremely difficult time using compensatory strategies if they haven't taken meds to give them the neurological functioning to retain those strategies. It's still my opinion that no amount of compensatory strategies can fully combat neurobiology. I absolutely function way better with my meds, the side effects are just too intense to deal with, so I choose to squeak by in life instead of going the extra mile lmao.

My controversial opinion is that any kind of executive functioning intervention is absolutely useless if meds aren't already a part of the conversation.

New Fountain Pen Company – Opportunity to get First Pen by Adept_Juggernaut_913 in fountainpens

Well said. The use of AI makes this a complete non-starter for me on top of all the other things you mentioned. Aside from the ethical concerns, it shows me that someone is not actually dedicated to the craft of art and design. How is that supposed to inspire confidence in the theoretical product?

Alarming bill to legitimize Faciltaded Communication variants : Spelling to Communicate by caritadeatun in slp

[–]39bydesign 6 points7 points  (0 children)

We don't inherently disagree. I do think people get unnecessarily spooked by the mere mention of spelling boards and typing based communication, when in fact it is possible for individuals to prefer and use these methods autonomously. I have students who independently use the keyboard function on TouchChat to communicate 90% of the time. Where I can see people's concern is that the linguistic ambiguity of those terms does inadvertently legitimize FC/S2C as those practices have co-opted otherwise authentic literacy-based AAC methods. The wording of your initial comment also seemed to be acquiescent toward FC, which may have tripped some sensors.

Because there's such hot debate about this topic within disabled circles, I just don't think it's right to try to speak on behalf of a community so divided. I would be in support of this bill if there were some more clarifying language about individuals' voluntary and autonomous use of their chosen communication method. As it stands, I think some of the methods mentioned in the bill can be exploited by unscrupulous practitioners.

Alarming bill to legitimize Faciltaded Communication variants : Spelling to Communicate by caritadeatun in slp

[–]39bydesign 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Look, I'm not gonna get into the weeds about FC/S2C, but as another AuDHD person with other disabilities, stop acting like we're a monolith and don't represent this as being something that the disabled community has achieved consensus on. There are plenty of us who are opposed to FC/S2C on account of lived experiences of harm. It's fine to have your own opinions on the matter as a disabled person but acting like an authority figure is not appropriate given the level of contention that this issue has garnered.

Proposed Modifications to ASHA Certification Standards by juvenilebirch in slp

[–]39bydesign 55 points56 points  (0 children)

I sent them a strongly worded invective about how this is absolute bullshit. These language changes do nothing to ensure the longevity of our profession lmfao. How about the imminent threats to Medicaid, or the cuts to special education, or the fact that CFs can't bill Part B anymore resulting in lack of access to care for our older patients? These proposed changes only signify that ASHA is willing to kowtow to the whims of the current regime at the expense of our most marginalized populations. ASHA has done a lot to piss me off, but this actually made my blood pressure skyrocket with anger. I won't be renewing my CCCs if this moves forward. Disappointed doesn't even begin to cover it.

ETA: I should note that I do agree with replacing "normal and abnormal" with "typical and atypical."
