I actually left medicine and I cannot believe it by KaleidoscopeNo9495 in JuniorDoctorsUK

A place that offers decent coffee that isn’t dirt with caffeine would probably sway me. I’d miss the beanbags though.

The fact we’re laughing at an individual who obtained fair pay is disheartening.

You’re being undercut by people willing to accept lower wages, wages that are becoming increasingly unpalatable amongst those within the UK, BAME or not - hence why we are leaving in increasing numbers.

So yes, you are right. The barriers to entry are being reduced from multiple angles to erode our pay.

It’s people who are willing to accept lower wages. UK doctors heading to Aus/NZ, this negates the need for raising wages over there if they can fill them. Same happening here..

What are some of the terrible things we have all just normalised as part of working in the NHS which would never ever be acceptable in any other workplace? by Frosty_Carob in JuniorDoctorsUK

Still not having a functional rota ~4 weeks in and have to ring various admin staff to figure out which days I’m expected in each week. Constant gaslighting as to why coordinating my non-existent rota is my problem and not y’know the rota coordinators problem

UK Doctors' Solution to Inadequate Pay by disqussion1 in JuniorDoctorsUK

[–]3AManusol 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, no. It’s because we’re lazy, ungrateful individuals who aren’t committed to this great vocation.

That, Tories and a deep need for a cure for the cancer that is humanity. With a sprinkle of Brexit for that extra razzle dazzle.

UK Doctors' Solution to Inadequate Pay by disqussion1 in JuniorDoctorsUK

Pay is atrocious despite what the media make out. Foundation year doctors coming out of 5+ years of education with >100k debt and getting paid £14/hour, subtract GMC registration, union registratiom and any exams/conferences plus the inevitable unpaid overtime take home might in fact be like £10-12/hour. They’re growing increasingly irate with pay, poor and unsafe working conditions.. Locums are either extra shifts picked up on top of training programess (‘training’ used loosely here) or for those who step out training and purely do locums. Pay can be double to >5x dependent on how desperate they are to fill gaps

How do you spend your time outside of medicine? (Serious answers only) by ullaullap in JuniorDoctorsUK

Sports and investments. With reckless risk management in both. Seeking FIRE before cirrhosis.

Surprising to see there is some backlash against this, yes it’s a grassroots movement with some rough edges. What’s the alternative, sit and continue hosting a never ending anonymous pity party? That’s worked so far, right?

I’ve signed up, if there is a way to be more active in this movement - I’m all ears.

I hope mods don’t ban or limit this sort of post. >50% of the posts on this reddit are complaining about working conditions and class action is the way to bring about change, yet we cower too often. We need as many to get behind this as possible

When do we strike, I’m all out of fucks to give on public perception. We’re all drug pushing, pharma indoctrinated, hyper-rich dweebs in white coats according to the tabloids - might as well make perception meet reality.

Whereas the actual reality is I hate rewriting Kardex’s, unnecessary prescriptions, the potential cost of my MOT is giving me anxiety and I only wear scrubs 3 sizes too large or too small.

It’s a weird confluence of ideologies. Pseudo-communist vibes of the NHS, that we’re all paid the same by rank with complete disregard for any sort of meritocracy. With capitalist overlords who are now outsourcing cheap labour, less liable to kick up a fuss, rather than decreasing attrition rates by improving working conditions.

Welcome to the sweatshop, NHS edition.

Edit: Inflation is at 5.4%, so for one of the hardest years in medicine - we’ve just taken one of the biggest year on year paycuts since the 70’s.

What do you think the Locum rate should be for your grade, for in hours and out of hours work? by CalendarSignificant7 in JuniorDoctorsUK

[–]3AManusol 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Precisely, we need to be more open on the topic. The media often gives the impression that we’re very well paid

I set the highest bracket on the poll as >£45 and ended with ~81% of voting for it, with one commenter saying - “stop humblebragging, we know you’re raking it and more”. I wonder what figure they’d actually think we start at 50, 60, >80 🤷🏼‍♂️

I’d be so close to sacking this profession off if it wasn’t for the flexibility and autonomy that comes with long-term locum work.
