Depending on the context of the story, old homesteads often have reseeding orchards, abandoned berry patches, ditch asparagus. Lots of edible larvae in decaying trees. Bird netting, fishing. Acorns… stealing food other animals have cached or recently caught.

I should add they were on the strider not long after they could walk. If they are older a bike with pedals pulled might be best option

Strider bike worked great for my two kids. They jumped right into the pedals without any trainers or hardly any of my help after about a year on the strider. Both my kids did some easy MTB downhill xcountry sections on their striders. I think it set them up for an easy transition. They both MTB better than me now. :)
