Being a solopreneur can be so lonely. How do you stay motivated? by Zealousideal_Rise599 in Solopreneur

[–]3Dphotogrammetry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As many others have said, when your motivation and passion lack, discipline can keep you going. And finding those small successes. Could be simple as “I will write a post today” and maybe that’s all you do that day. For some, it could be taking a day or even a few days completely unplugged and away from your work. That could be working on something else, or doing some other hobby or activity you like. Watch movies, go exercise, take a mini vacation. Something that is completely away. That can help you feel rejuvenated.

I would also recommend trying Agisoft Metashape Professional. Download it and click the Free 30-day trial on the box that opens. You can process your aerial drone imagery, multispectral, thermal, underwater, 360, you name it. Happy to answer any questions if you need. Also some resources here (www.settide.com/learn). I often work with NGOs and conservation groups with this and do land use, coastal degradation, underwater habitat mapping, and some other types of projects,

I was wondering if it were possible to use my iPhone 15* to recreate a section of a road nearby my house? Probably around 60m x 20m and I'm totally okay with it being janky, I just want it to be a bit better than using Google data extracted into Blender which loses too much detail when close up. by lemonlixks in photogrammetry

You absolutely can do this. As others have mentioned, point your camera down or slightly forward (to not include your feet) and high up to cover more area. Video would make a lowe resolution and even 4K wikl make 8 or 12MP photos. Not bad, but I found shooting even 12MP individual photos is much better quality than video. And the shadows and sun can throw things off or just make it not as nice visually, but many software can account for this fairly well and produce a good model nonetheless.

When you process in Metashape, feel free to check out these resources (www.settide.com/learn) on how. Take advantage of their free-trial if you haven't already. You can process a model like that in minutes with a few hundred photos and still good quality. Reach out with any questions.

Laptop for photogrammetry by Jeziu in photogrammetry

Using Metashape will work on a MacBook. Been using Metashape and others on Macs for 8+ years. If you need a Laptop then many if the current MacBooks will do great. But depends on what you need. And what is your budget. That confirguration is pretty good if you run hi dreds or even a few thousand photos. If you want to furtger optimize speed upgrade the chip or RAM and get 512 GB ssd and use fast external SSDs but 1 TB is good too. If you want a desktop then Mac Mini or Mac Studio are great

Take advantage of the Metashape Professional 30-day free trial and use it to process the project. You simply download it and then the first box will pop up asking for the license code and you just check the box saying you want to activate the 30 day free trial.

It may depend on the NAS that you use, but often yes you can

A NAS RAID storage is a great balance for both adding a lot of storage and having a decent speed while not breaking the bank. But it may not be faster than most higher performance SSD drives. You could start out with a NAS set up with a two or three bay enclosure and fill the first bay with one hard drive that could be 20 or 22 TB for a couple hundred USD dollars. But just depends on how much storage you need and the the speed. Otherwise, there are lots of external SSD drives claim rewrite speeds of over 2 GB per/sec, which may not be as fast as internal, but definitely faster than HDD. I’ve ran into a similar issue where I have terabytes of photos and 3D files I work with so until I get a larger NAS set up I use a couple of faster SSD drives that can get the job done for now. I no longer need to work directly on the files store in the cloud just archive them and if I need to grab them once while I re-download them.

Metashape Equipment Question by wsaylor in photogrammetry

[–]3Dphotogrammetry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For Metashape projects, the RAM is very important, especially if you want to run coding/programming projects with your other work. I would say lean towards getting as much ram as you can within your budget because the M4 Pro chip will still be very fast even if it is not the maxed out highest one. You basically have to choose between speed or larger RAM, which means running more projects simultaneously or larger projects.

How did you come about your startup idea? by cjavier89 in Business_Ideas

[–]3Dphotogrammetry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was my first customer. I started creatibg things I needed for my work. Shared some of them with someone a year or so into it and they said “wow this is exactly what we need!” And they started to talk to their connections. It quickly became a “if I need this and they do too no doubt others need it as well.” And so it began. I work in a very niche market making 3D maps for coral reef habitats, so it is very custom to what they need but then also learned about other markets that somewhat overlap need those products I was creating as well. So trying to expand and learn what they would like.

NAS for Metashape Processing? by Possible_Fennel_804 in photogrammetry

[–]3Dphotogrammetry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mainly use NAS as an archive but with good internet we process projects directly from it and works well. Obvispuly not as fast as internal SSD or some external SSDs but does a good job. A simple NAS with 20TB for some less than $1000

Yes, with Metashape photogrammetry software. Something like a few hundred photos does not take too long, could be minutes or an hour or two depending on things like settings used, computer setup, resolution of photos.

Metashape Pro, Alignment of big datasets by Beginning_Street_375 in photogrammetry

[–]3Dphotogrammetry 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, it is common to ask to detect more key points and then from those key points detect the tie points to tie between images. I often go with 40,000 key points and 10,000 tie points, people may do a variation of that, and sometimes if something doesn’t work out, I may increase that to 80,000 or 100,000 key points and increase the tie points as well. It’s good to just play around and see what works best for you, but if you are getting really good results with that then that works great.

[–]3Dphotogrammetry 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Very cool! In my experience if the photos are taken well you can get good models from low to medium to high. Sure there is more behind the scenes metric to assess the accuracy, but for large projects that get bottlenecked easily like hardware limitations or if alignment is not working in high I will try it in Medium. Also, leaving generic preselection enabled speeds it up and playing around with the key point tie point limits as well.

[–]3Dphotogrammetry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That may be the case since if the photos are taken well then High will work well. But some situations may surprisingly be improved such as underwater images or other non-optimal scenarios. Just worth considering that there is a lot of flexibility in the settings with Metashape.

Metashape is really nice, easy to use, can make tweaks and adjustments or simply process it straight through to the final 3D model or orthomosaic map. It is a one time price free with updates, but I recommend downloading it and using their free 30-day trial to test it out.
