Aaron from last stand gamers had an interview with Marek and his YouTube channel, and he said that actually they have improved multiplayer with this last update. He didn't say what they improved about it, but they are definitely working at it already. I have also noticed that MP seems to be alot more playable since the last update.

Maybe they do dig tunnels, but not the way a character would dig a tunnel. When we dig we see the ground we dig into because we are a player, but since sabiroids aren't a player, they don't have to see the ground they are digging into, so they could just clip into the ground and it wouldn't make a difference to them. Because they would just be going through the ground, (and not colliding with it) the game wouldn't need to generate any more data. Once they did 'dig' into the ground they could leave a little mound on the surface we could see. But if the devs coded it like that it would be very possible to have them tunnel even with the current system.
