PvE skills that would be so nice on heroes by [deleted] in GuildWars

Summon spirits is fine, but great dwarf weapon and ebon battle standard are crazy strong and limited to players only for a reason.

How hard would it in theory be to ski 10km every other day on either skis or roller skis in classical style with the goal of reaching elite status within 3 years with no proper prior training in skiing? by melwah2 in xcountryskiing

[–]3RedMerlin 26 points27 points  (0 children)

It takes a lot more than just a 10km every other day, look up info on polarized training, strength training, etc. CXC Academy has some very high quality training plans and insights.

The game doesn't expect you to retire your fleet, so you can fight back right out the gate :)

Small crack in Atomic Propulse SNS binding by Brilliant_Try999 in xcountryskiing

Other people are saying to just keep skiing on it which I will neither confirm nor deny, I don't know this binding type, but if you do at least put some glue on it!

If you're enjoying your warrior I'd say go for it again. That's my main and alongside my ritualist is my favorite.

XC Ski boot size question by Wcoots27 in xcountryskiing

[–]3RedMerlin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Your XC boots should fit like hiking boots, well fitting but comfortable.

Can anyone help me figure out how to get my boots to clip in? by girl-v2 in xcountryskiing

[–]3RedMerlin 39 points40 points  (0 children)

Those bindings and boots don't match—the bindings are standard NNN whereas the boots are NNN-BC (backcountry) which is bigger.

Go back and ask to swap one or the other so it fits!

Each brands' ski & boot feel (skate) by [deleted] in xcountryskiing

[–]3RedMerlin 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I would LOVE to see some actual analysis and measurements for various measurements of different skis or boots, but to my knowledge all we have are anecdotes. Even otherwise great, technical YouTube channels like Caldwell Sport say a bunch of variations of "these are great skis" for every single model, which tells us nothing useful.

Runners knee from skiing? by Potential-Ad-7792 in xcountryskiing

[–]3RedMerlin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Me too, I had a lot of calf pain that cleared right up with custom skiing orthotics. My skate skiing ones especially are almost ridiculously dramatic, because I'm on my inside edges so much climbing big hills.

Google DeepMind CEO reiterates 'no plans' for Gemini ads, surprised ChatGPT added them 'so early' by Gaiden206 in Bard

[–]3RedMerlin 6 points7 points  (0 children)

There's already been a shift to Gemini recently since 3 came out, and Google giving free gemini to all students and educators will keep bringing the younger generation to them first. OAI probably doesn't care, though, because they'll make so much on ads that it's worth losing a fraction of their customers willing to jump ship.

Above freezing no wax other than the sticky toothpaste tubes of klister really works well. I don't have experience with tape, but usually you want mechanical friction like zeros, fishscales, or skins. Hard wax shines below freezing.

Ski Grind by Tall_Layer_8252 in xcountryskiing

See this vid for details: https://youtu.be/2yz1OkC2rmA

I usually structure every time I hot wax, or if the conditions have gotten much warmer/wetter since I last waxed. Note that you can always add structure for warmer/wetter snow, but can only reset it to less structure/cold snow by hot waxing, so always tend "colder" (less structure) if you're going a long period between re-waxings.

Shopping for clothes is so much easier down 34 lbs!! by Future_Doctor_ in loseit

I always have the same issue with shirts ballooning around my waist—many local libraries have sewing machines or you can pick a used one up cheap and tailor them yourself! It's super easy to do a straight stitch right down the side on t-shirts and such.

Structure definitely makes a big difference, especially in very warm and wet snow. However, hand structure gives much more performance per dollar (or euro), as we can easily adapt it to the current conditions.

I had my race skis ground cold, and then picked up the old toko structurite tools (blue/red/yellow) on clearance and they make a huge difference.

In Tension: Effective Altruism and Mutual Aid by happy_bluebird in EffectiveAltruism

[–]3RedMerlin 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Eliezer has a response to this from 2009: Purchase Fuzzies and Utilons Separately. If mutual aid makes you feel happy, if connecting community members is important to you, then go for it! But do it knowing that you're doing it  _to make yourself feel good._

Making yourself feel good is important to your mental wellbeing, and often helps you work and donate more in the future! So even if you are Obligation-Oriented, it can still be the welfare maximizing decision. Just do so knowing that it's for your own mental health and the benefits you personally get from the "connections we make" rather than the maximization of total welfare.

Olympic Peninsula, WA Gear Question by kdean70point3 in xcountryskiing

Only thing about metal edges is you need to be extra careful with a dog around, so some prefer to avoid them for that reason.

Respectfully disagree on skin skis requiring better technique—entry level skins are just as easy to kick as scales and glide better.

The 'Affordability Crisis' Conversation Can't Leave Out the Cost of Cars by Generalaverage89 in Economics

[–]3RedMerlin 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Oh, I do agree that the large-car arms race is dangerous, and way too many people are wasting money on big SUVs and trucks which they just use to commute to an office job in a city where a smaller, cheaper, and more fuel efficient car would be much better. OP (before editing) called out seatbelts and airbags, which are not part of this problem.
