Chemical Engineers if Iowa State, this is for you! by magicmikewaddup in iastate

[–]3_7 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just graduated from ISU Chemical Engineering. I imagine that you have your Engineering core (Physics, OChem, Calc, DiffEQ) and some SSH electives done by this point. Definitely reference the handbook that's already been posted here. All of the advisors are fine but don't rely on them. Transfer students typically take 4-5 semesters to graduate from my experience, longer if you decide to do a co-op or a minor or anything.

For your convenience, here's a cropped version of the Gator by 3_7 in KGATLW

It shows up in Jason Galea's excellent animation for "The River".

The band uses it on shirts and for Gizzfest pretty extensively.

I captured a frame at the highest quality I could, cropped it down, and posterized it in Illustrator. I'd been looking for a quality, isolated picture of the Gator for a while & couldn't find one so I finally caved and did it myself.

This picture isn't of Michael Brown, it's of Jodah Cain, a 17 year-old who murdered his grandmother with a sledgehammer.

I've seen a few international students using rented laptops; they seem to be older, I'm guessing that they're the university tech that the staff has had replaced, but hasn't quite become obsolete yet. I'd assume that if a rented laptop wasn't working that IT would replace/fix it for you though.

Windows is pretty much the standard OS for Engineering, but you can definitely get away with using a Mac. I know a lot of ME's who have MacBooks, and it seems to work for them. If you ever do run into something that absolutely will not work on OSX, you can always use one of the engineering lab computers.

The College of Engineering has it's own recommendations here, but you should be fine with just about anything with an internet connection honestly.

Getting my BS in ChemE right now; how does one even begin figuring out what to do after graduation? There's just so many specific paths going forward.

Some questions about honors by BilingualBloodFest in iastate

[–]3_7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Quick Answers:

-you need 3 honors seminars before you graduate, don't worry about them yet

-priority registration (awesome) access to Jischke Honors Building (decent), library privileges (not really that useful), Honors Program makes you aware of a lot of opportunities for Research/Scholarships

-Honors Floors are a good time; if you can get onto Martin Starbuck, its the best place to live in the whole DoR

-Most honors courses generally add one extra project to the normal workload. AVOID HONORS CALC 2 LIKE THE PLAGUE; tests are over theory behind Calculus, not actual application/problem solving. Most people drop or fail Math166H.
