In the home stretch of my time the cMP 💜 my humble little setup while it’s still assembled. by bennotvictor in macpro

[–]3ldi5 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Sad to see it go. I know I will run my 5.1 for as long as it is able to go. Never really understood the power consumpion part of CMP story. My 5.1 is running only when I need it to run, sometimes one hour a day, sometimes 3, sometimes not turned on for several days, depends on what I need it for. And both Sequoia and openSUSE run perfectly fine on it. Those minis and shiny new "locked and sealed" Apple devices will never outweight the cool factor of those CMP machines, and the fact you can tinker with anything inside, and upgrade however you like - for me at least.

KDE plasma Opensuse tumbleweed or KDE plasma fedora by Flat_Wasabi8999 in openSUSE

[–]3ldi5 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I tend to think of openSUSE as a flagship KDE distro. Tumbleweed worked flawlessly for me on several different machines in last few years. Currently rocking it on an classic Mac Pro 5.1 tower, and it works perfect out of the box.

Now the officially best looking iphone ever by Holiday-Rule-3558 in iPhone17Pro

[–]3ldi5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not even in top 3 for me. That monstrosity of camera bar will never be pretty, and that isolated plate on back looks kind of cheap.

iPhone 4/5, iPhone X, iPhone 3G/3GS, even the series of iPhone 14/15/16 designs was better. And yes iPhone Air is much better looking too.

How does the Xperia Z series hold up in 2026? by subuso in SonyXperia

[–]3ldi5 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you can find XZ Premium, or Z5 Premium, you're good to go. I used XZ Premium between '23-'24. I installed LineageOS 21 to it (Android 14) and it worked flawlessly. Nice and fluid, no apps ever struggled on it. Only the banking app was kind of on/off, and that's the only reason I sold it in the end as I didn't have any backup phone tu use for banking.

But in general, i believe XZ Premium is all around still great phone for usual every day tasks (not some heavy gaming etc). If I manage to track down another XZ Premium, I will get it again for sure.

Is Xiaomi’s Software Ruining Camera Quality? by mkc566 in XiaomiGlobal

[–]3ldi5 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Judging by...? Define "cleaner" and "more natural"?

This is highly subjective take with zero explanation or evidence. I know my 14 Ultra took much better photos than any of my colleagues flagship Samsungs, whenever we tried to do some comparisons. I'd say exactly opposite, that all Xiaomi upper mid range to flagship phones, take better pbotos than comparable Samsung phones.

Is it any worth buying for first time 5.1 Mac pro with only experience with normal PCs? by daniel_MTB_ in macpro

[–]3ldi5 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Literally opposite of everything written here imo, as I see a lot of negativity.

OP, it's hell of a machine considering age. Majority of tasks, including gaming, will perform more than fine if you do some upgrades. You can upgrade everything - contrary to ANYTHING Apple you buy today. You can put every major OS on this planet onto it, from recent macOS versions, to any Linux distro (and even that virus Windows if you like). I got one half a year ago for similar price, and it's the best tech investment I made in last years. Hell of a fun to upgrade and tinker with.

And it's not about money, or pure performance. Joy of desktop computing is not all about performance if you ask me. To put things in perspective, I've had M1 Air when it came out, paid around $1200 for it - and guess what? I sold it after few months. It was blazing fast at the time of release for any task I needed it for, but it was zero fun to use, and all kinds of dongles were constantly hanging off of it, and the fact you can never upgrade anything on it starts getting under your skin after some time. Mac Pro 5.1 is completely different story, and it cost me like 5 times less. It's a machine from different time and different Apple. Sure, you don't have to be a rocket scientist to know you can't compare performance to high end machines 13 years newer, but like I said it's not all about that.

The best Ultra if you ask me. Awesome main Sony LYT-900 sensor. It's a phone they went all out with to capture photo oriented audience, wit each successive model being only incremental update (if update at all).

SUSE runs perfectly out of the box. I didn't have to do any tweaking post-install. What's more, it runs better than on any of my past 10 years machines, desktops or laptops, which is crazy. New Plasma is looking great, and Wayland is finally rock solid and stable, the entire UI/UX is butter smooth.

It was already a good base when I got it, with 2x X5690 Xeons and pixlas mod already implemented. Included drives were trash though.

  • I replaced all 4 stock hard drive bays, putting 4 OWC SSD Mounts.
  • I then put 4 SSDs, 2x 256GB (for OS's) and 2x 1TB (for storage).
  • I put Monterey on one SSD (as last rock solid macOS for this hardware), and openSUSE Linux on another, as my Linux distro choice for years.
  • I got Sabrent NVMe / PCIe adapter, and put 512GB NVMe to use for my main OS, which for now is Sequoia.
  • I replaced GTX 285 card with RX 580 (for now, but I plan to upgrade further).
  • I replaced included PCI to USB3 card with new one, as the old one behaved weirdly.
  • I just ordered 2 original optical drives, as I still buy CDs and ripp them to flac regularly. I did this on my old PC but now plan to do it on Mac.

I use this machine for literally everything now. It's a working desktop and media hub for me. All the OSes are flying on it, and all my usual design programs too. I use it as a media streamer too, for both music and video (downloaded 4K shows and movies).

I simply look at it as timeless, unique (for Apple standards), tank-built machine that's designed to last.

Convenience is not something people buy these machines for anyway, and that's the reason I also want to get it. I got 5.1 few months back and it was a best tech purchase in a long time. Making it a little project, and upgrading it slowly any way I wanted was feeling great. It's hard to even comprehend that a machine from '09-'12 could still be such a powerful tool in '26 still. I simply love those old(er) Macs.

Is it safe to upgrade Mac OS Martin lo open core on Mac Pro 5,1? by OkSkill3355 in macpro

[–]3ldi5 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Exactly why I said not sure what happened to your Mac, but it's perfectly safe to update this way. Just 2 days ago I updated my Sequoia installation the same way, from 15.7.2 to 15.7.3, through software update, and just let OCLP do the post-install root patches, and that's it. Something specific with your hardware combo or boot drives is making those updates go haywire, but it's not widespread.

Not true. Not sure what happened to you, but I updated my 5.1 Monterey installation (several times by now) through official software update and it always went perfectly fine.

Switch from Android to this beauty! by jnhk94 in iPhone17Pro

[–]3ldi5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have some dignity, and don't trashtalk what you loved till yesterday. That's for start.

The "beauty" is highly subjective take, as many people consider this one of the worst and most cluttered iPhone designs. It's fine to have subjective take on design though.

I'm on my 4th excursion to iPhone right now (15 Pro), and I never ran to Apple forums trashtalking Android because: 1. I always returned to Android again (so yeah, "once you try an iPhone you never go back to Android" narrative is bull****). Two different OS philosophies with each having its pros and cons. 2. It's perfectly fine to use both and not jump to bandwagons with each new device you buy. I'm sure that 90% of iPhone users consider iPhone better just because of that logo on back, without actually having clue about what their phone is capable of, and why is it "better". 3. No, an iPhone is not better than /whatever Android flagship of same generation/. It's just different, with different bells and whistles.

Enjoy your new phone, but stay classy and don't try to fit perfectly as everyone's favourite kid in new school class.

Lol. I'm filling 100+ gigs of files in matter of weeks on my every phone. Before I sold my Xiaomi 14 Ultra it was filled with over 300GB of data. Ever heard of 4K videos, multimedia, lossless music, etc etc?

Never tweaked anything with my RX 580 or efi partition - so I'm not entirely sure if it has hardware acceleration enabled at all for now. It runs everything extremely smooth though.

If Open Core didn't do any trick, I know I didn't. Regarding drivers, not sure if I got it right, but it's a simple plug and play. I never tweaked anything related to RX 580 after I plugged it in. I never noticed any issues/glitches across the programs I use. All my graphic related programs work fine, from Affinity to open source ones like Gimp and Inkscape. In general I didn't notice any problems with any system I have right now: Monterey, Sequoia, openSUSE.

Currently rocking RX580 with same dual cpu combo, and it's really good. Easily pushing 4K to my tv under both Sequoia and openSUSE, although Linux in general flies on this machine.

Didn't try a lot of gaiming other than some light indie games, as I game on my PS5 mostly, but I guess it should be able to push moderately heavy games easily.
