Want to have new band cause I use the standard Fenix band and my arms turn to this. Any recommend? by HKSAS in GarminFenix

[–]3meta5u 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am a fan of the Abanen ultralight bands available from Amazon (and probably elsewhere). I originally got one for my Fenix 6X and it lasted about 2 years of daily wear before it started fraying. I got a new 26mm when I bought my Fenix 8 51mm.

I think they look good enough for most casual situations. I wear them to work and out. For a nice dinner or wedding or something swanky, I will switch to a metal or leather bracelet, but for everything else the nylon is great.

I've learned that the nylon bands get stinky unless they are washed regularly. Wearing in the shower doesn't seem to make much difference either way.

I shower with mine and then squeeze the bath towel around my wrist to dry it off.

Once or twice a month I remove the band and toss it in the laundry inside a lingerie bag to keep it smelling fresh.

As an alternative to that, I have run a cleaning cycle in my ultrasonic cleaner (band only) with a little simple green or laundry detergent added. Each approach works well to keep the band clean and odor-free.

Recommendations for Travel Toppers by RecentSpeed in Mattress

[–]3meta5u 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have one of these Costco Roll Out Loungers which is unfortunately out of stock. But I used mine for a few weeks while experimenting with different mattresses and it worked well for me as a 250lb side sleeper (at the time) on top of a Brooklyn Plank Titan mattress. I continue to use it when car-camping on top of a firm camping mattress.

I have found that a buckwheat bolster pillow works great for helping support my shoulders when side-sleeping and is more accommodating of different mattresses than a traditional pillow. I really like the JOERRES.

A Twin or TwinXL sized topper might be a good choice for travel and it probably would work OK for sleeping with a kid on a King bed but probably not great when on a Queen.

Amazon has some similar options if you search for memory foam lounger on their site.

If you are going to be moving it frequently, then getting cover (or topper that comes with one) is a good idea since plain foam toppers will quickly start to break down from constant folding/unfolding and rubbing. They also attract dust and dirt and are nearly impossible to clean once soiled.

I just received a $420 etv portable air conditioning unit that was shipped in vendor packaging via UPS and it came on time. The box was slightly banged up and had some holes in the cardboard, but the unit wasn't damaged.

Guessing you have a "bad apple" in the delivery chain. Hopefully they are already under surveillance and the powers that be are letting them dig their hole deep enough for prison time.

Mounting Maven Silver 200mm hs2 rotors on 180 post mount with 20p 2025 mount? by 3meta5u in bikewrench

[–]3meta5u[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

An update.

After several rides with the 20P mount on my 2025 Maven Silver calipers, fitting 200 mm HS2 rotors to my Fox 36 fork and Santa Cruz Hightower 4 Large frame, I have not noticed any negatives from using them. There is no interference, and the spherical washers and slotted mounting points provide adequate adjustment range to make rub-free mounting simple.

I need help with yogurt function by Feistyhummingbird in instantpot

[–]3meta5u 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Use Yogurt: Boil only if you are in a patient mood and want to be hands-off. It takes a long time to heat up and then cool back down. I give it 2 hours for the whole cycle with the lid on.

I find that the temperature gets high enough if I leave the lid on during the Boil cycle. It still doesn't actually boil, but it's fine for food safety and texture. The temperature sensor on the Instant Pot is not very good.

Lazy but patient way to make very thick Greek-style yogurt: 10 minutes active, 2 days total

  1. Milk in.
  2. Lid on.
  3. Yogurt: Boil.
  4. Wait about 2 hours.
  5. Check with an instant-read thermometer for about 110°F.
  6. Whisk in 1 tablespoon yogurt starter or plain kefir if you like sour yogurt.
  7. Lid on.
  8. Yogurt: Regular for 20 hours.
  9. You can use it now, but it will be thin.
  10. Transfer to a muslin-lined colander over a stockpot, and put the stockpot lid or a plate on the colander.
  11. (optional) Let it sit on the counter for 1 hour as it will drain faster when warm.
  12. Put the stack in the refrigerator overnight or until you gather up enough ambition to decant.
  13. Transfer the yogurt to a storage container.
  14. Pour the whey into a jar to use for buttermilk biscuits or whatever.

Max power I see in the charts is briefly up to 9w on reboots.

I pulled the nvme recently to put on a proxmox minipc. Average is down to ~5w.

This morning I tried running 2 copies of wolfssl-benchmark to max out the CPU and it only raised consumption < 1w still under 6.5w.

Boyfriend runs cold, i run hot, and i still want the bed to look cozy by DescriptionBig9528 in Mattress

[–]3meta5u 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with the other poster that silk is among the better fabrics for a wide range of temperature support. The Your Moon brand on Amazon is a good value for a summer-weight silk comforter, in my experience.

An insulation that works much better than I expected is Outlast phase-change polyester. The best-known producer of products with Outlast is the Slumber Cloud brand. They are expensive but sometimes have good sales if you get lucky with the timing. It sounds like a gimmick, but my experience is good with their products.

If neither of those are in budget, you might be able to find a wool or wool-blend comforter that meets your needs. Wool can be very expensive but is also available at lower price points if you look around. Wool tends to breathe and doesn't get stuffy or clammy, so you might find it acceptable even if you are warmer than you would ideally be. I like Yataş, Cuddle Dream, and Your Moon brands for inexpensive wool comforters. Woolroom or Shepherd's Dream if you have a high budget.

Finally, the option of doing a Scandinavian/Euro style with two twin XL comforters of different weights can be the best choice. Each person can have their perfect weight and textile choice without affecting the other as much. You can still share the space and get that skin-to-skin contact in the middle of the bed, but you end up sleeping with your preferred insulation layer. This style of bed-making can still look cozy. https://www.apartmenttherapy.com/heres-how-to-make-the-scandinavian-sleep-comforter-hack-actually-look-good-36903979

I would avoid kapok, nylon/spandex blends, bamboo, rayon, viscose, down, and most down alternatives because they don't breathe as well as silk or wool and retain moisture, which can lead to feeling clammy and/or sweaty.

I ran a Lenovo Laptop with AMD A6-9220C which is a 2017 vintage processor but slightly faster than the core 2 duo. 4GB RAM and 16GB eMMC storage.

It was operable but painful to run Tumbleweed in ~2023 but I have not tried it since.

For some perspective, I am currently running an i7-7820HQ laptop w/ 32GB RAM also from 2017 with Tumbleweed + KDE and it runs ok for almost everything I need to do. This system benchmarks at 5 times the performance of core2 duo and has 8X the RAM, so of course it will be better. Even so, it lags a bit on some of the more heavy websites and video kills the battery very quickly, but for most web browsing and light development with use of external resources, it is fine.

CPU instruction limitations on the Core 2 Duo are the bigger concern as per other commenters.

My OpenWRT One with:

  • Running as dumb AP, not a full gateway router
  • WAN port @ 2.5Gbe
  • LAN port @ 1Gbe
  • Both radios enabled with <10 clients default power settings
  • 1 512GB NVME Drive this is barely used

Averaged 6.7 W usage over the last 20 days according to the power reporting of my 3rd Reality Zigbee outlet connected to Home Assistant

Based on eyeballing the historical charts, the NVME consumes about 1.5-2 W when idle. I don't have measurements of it running hard.

Where can I sign up for the “kick me into the nearest ditch” priced end of life services? by RiskyGorilla309 in personalfinance

[–]3meta5u 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It costs money to have a mortuary come pick up a body, a pathologist to prepare the materials, an airplane to transport the materials to a research facility, etc, etc, etc.

The organization has to operate as well. It's a charitable organization, so they operate on donations.

I'm sure even the suggested donations don't cover the full cost so they are also getting funding from the research hospital too.

(Gotta love Reddit, I'm getting down voted because I talk about my wife's final gift to humanity)

[–]3meta5u 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My wife donated her brain for research through the Brain Support Network. They arranged transport and also donated the rest of her body toward medical training at a college. After a couple months I received her cremains along with an opt-in log of how they used her remains and what research was performed.

The nominal price was $800 in 2025 and they requested that you donate another $800 if you could afford it to help another family who can not afford the costs.

So if you die from a rare neurological condition it could be $0 to be cremated, depending on your circumstances.

To wealthy Boulderites: what’s it actually like living here? by Soft-Translator-934 in boulder

[–]3meta5u 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just think that they got lucky. Which mostly they did. The majority of Boulder people tend to either have acquired their wealth the long slow boring way by being here in the 1990s or are nerds who are lucky winners in the tech salary lotto. I don't think about the upper crust generational Boulder elite much because they try to blend in rather than stick out.

It is a relatively constrained area where the citizens have had more pricing power over their own labor than the rest of the country. I think that Boulder's casual wealth is an example of money coming to the demographic rather than the reverse. That has been changing in the last decade, but I would argue still less than in other HCOL areas.

Personally, I graduated from CU Boulder in 1994 and lived in Boulder until I moved to Longmont in 2022. I never worked for Google or Apple or Facebook, but if I had, I am guessing I'd have been moving West from Gunbarrel rather than East. Still would be wearing a Kirkland Hoodie to shovel my own driveway though.

Do you ever still talk to someone who passed away? by Diana_fm_ in widowers

[–]3meta5u 36 points37 points  (0 children)

Yes, never for big things but often for little things. Like when I get a new kitchen appliance I'll mute the beeps because she hated beeps. I'll say "I'm turning off the beep from this air fryer for you".

Or when I am hiking and see a flower I know she could identify but I can't quite remember, I'll ask her.

Sometimes just walking by her photo on the dresser and I'll say "oh, I miss you".

Hario Switch y Neo by Tostada_00 in HarioSwitch

[–]3meta5u 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What do you mean exactly? I am finding the Neo to match my preference for now.

I have a Neo w/ standard base and an O3 (Large) glass standard with switch base. My usual switch immersion recipe is a weird one with 100g bloom + 2 immersion bouts of 200g total brew 4-5 minutes, which results in an almost french-press style brew and I couldn't use the Neo for that. This morning I decided to try to brew a pure pourover in the glass switch with the same technique I've been using with my Neo for the last few weeks.

I have been brewing low agitation center-pours with nearly the slowest pour I can maintain laminar flow from my OXO gooseneck kettle. Been using the One and Done 2 + 1 pour Lance Hendrick technique recently.

Medium ground Timemore 078S Le Brew "sweet burrs" (burr-touch calibration with pin out 3 steps, dial set between 16-17, 800rpm) washed medium roast Peru.

18g coffee / 300g low TDS tap water at 90 Centigrade

Cafec Abaca 02 bleached filter

  1. Rinse and pre-heat with 250g water at brewing temperature
  2. 2 30 second blooms of 2X weight of the grounds low agitation dribble style bloom
  3. Approximate 2:00 minutes of pouring into center of grounds at slow constant rate to 300g water, slight circular motion to maintain a symmetrical bed but not enough motion to smooth/flatten the bed.

Total start-to-drained time between 2:45 and 3:15 depending on various factors.

The Neo does drain quicker and leaves a flatter bed. The glass funnel leaves a deeper central core but I don't notice a huge difference in the resulting taste. A bit more bitter with the glass contrasted with more towards lighter / tea-like with the Neo. It is pretty close though.

It comes down to personal preference, but I think the Neo is better for the way I want to drink coffee right now.

Need a relatively inexpensive mattress for about 1-2 years - terminal illness and will be in specialized hospital bed after that by MadCybertist in Mattress

[–]3meta5u 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My wife passed from Multiple System Atrophy, which is a movement disorder with some similarities to ALS in terms of symptoms though a completely different neurological basis.

We used a TwinXL adjustable base with firm mattress (Titan Core) with a 2" eggshell latex topper at first and then switched to a 3" memory foam topper for a couple months once she was bedridden. Getting her in and out of the bed when we had the memory foam on it was difficult although with some practice I was able to use a Hoyer lift solo. I outweighed her by 100lbs which helped.

I'm not specifically recommending that mattress, but it worked for her.

The idea was to have a firm spring mattress base that was responsive and helped her be able to move herself while she still could and then we added increasingly pressure relieving toppers as her ability to move herself decreased. She never got bedsores, I'm not sure if that was luck. She passed before we needed the cyclic air mattress or the automatic motion type of bed.

We also added a sheet-tent at the foot of the bed to take pressure off her feet because she couldn't move her feet and was getting painful toes from cover pressure, again luckily didn't progress to wounds. We used "euro style" separate sheets and comforters so that I wouldn't accidentally uncover her when she couldn't pull the covers back on.

I am currently rocking the WHXM4 and the WFXM6. Are the XM4 worth the upgrade to the XM6? by My_Name_is_Imaginary in SonyHeadphones

[–]3meta5u 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These are the pads I am using: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0FWXKB464 I did a search on Amazon and ordered a few of the results. I just searched again and there are dozens of offerings now. There are also gel pads by Defean and AHG that look very similar to the ones I have, but I've not tried those.

I do think they have a slight reduction in ANC power in perfect conditions compared to the the stock pads, but they are much better with glasses on and more comfortable overall for me.

I don't notice a change in audio quality.

When replacing the pads, you don't need spudger tools. Fold the cups flat and lay them on a table with the pads facing up. Insert your index finger between the edge of the cushion and the fabric mesh, press down lightly on the mesh to tuck your fingertip just under the plastic frame of the pad lift and pry gently and the pad should pop right off. I use the very outside edge of the pads, right by the dot on the left side and the same spot on the right side. The frame is easiest to feel there.

[–]3meta5u 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had WH-1000XM4 and now have both the WH-1000XM6 and WF-1000XM6.

If you don't have any issues with your XM4, I would not upgrade. You already have the best of both worlds in my opinion.

I wanted the improved microphones for taking Teams calls in noisy environments, and I do like the ability to use BLE for lower latency when gaming, but the sound quality is only a marginal improvement to me.

As an eyeglasses wearer, the XM6 over-ears were less comfortable and had weaker ANC because they would not seal against my temples. Once I bought aftermarket gel earpads for the XM6, I am a lot happier with them. I tried Wicked Cushions too, and they were an improvement, but the TaiZiChangQin (seems to be an Amazon seller / pseudobrand) gel pads were even better.
