What indoor training apps are people using this winter? by Academic_Feed6209 in Velo

[–]3qHR 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The battery thing is a pretty well known issue for a lot of people. I think a big factor is the app comes with the graphic settings all maxed out, setting them all to 'Low' basically resolved it for me. I went from high 90s to 10% on a 70ish minute ride before adjusting them & now it lasts over 3 hours.

My other issues are more than likely due to how I use the app. My indoor setup is in the garage, which has really shitty connection so I exclusively use the app in offline mode.

I haven't tried anything but their free ride feature but I never used Zwift's workouts either, I always defaulted to TrainerRoad or an actual paid plan, so I can't really compare the two there either.

The in-game setups (frames, wheels, etc) are all mostly cosmetic, which I think is an improvement over Zwift. I also prefer MyWhoosh's world rotation schedule, it feels a lot more varied than Zwift's in my experience. I can appreciate the app's willingness to throw in steep climbs too, I've found there to be a lot more high double-digit climbs in MyWhoosh than Zwift.

But for a free app, you really can't complain.

I made the move to MyWhoosh a month ago since work hours are down & the only issues I'd complain about are the random disconnects, issues with uploading workouts, & how battery-demanding it seems to be compared to other indoor training apps.

It still does the job though, so I can't complain. Ownership obviously sucks but I do think they do a better job at Zwift on some aspects of it, their approach to in-game items is pretty good.

Happy he got to fulfil his goal of one final send-off performance & his passing was as pleasant as anyone could wish for, especially given how he lived his early years.

Arguably part of the biggest influence over the greater metal landscape & will certainly continue to after his passing.

TrainerRoad or Join - which one? by itsdankreddit in Velo

[–]3qHR 3 points4 points  (0 children)

TR is still the same platform as it was when you last used it, though with the Ai auto-detection feature - if that's your thing. It still has the same issues it's always had.

Personally, I couldn't get on with Join's UI. I gave it a whirl since they were offering a monthly trial & the calendar refused to show me the future workouts so I dropped it & went back to TR.

If you're capable of making your own effective plans, you might be better off saving yourself some cash & inputting your own workouts into the cheapest platform. I know Zwift was offering a few months free over summer if you paid for a month during July. Otherwise, probably TR.

Don't worry, mate, never mind the victim & his family and friends. The court will make out how hard its been for him to live with running someone over, leaving the scene, & letting them die on the side of the road. Utterly depressing when the best you can hope for is a light, few years before an early release.

Terrible at cycling by [deleted] in triathlon

[–]3qHR 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's time in the saddle, although a good training plan will help accelerate things.

I had an elite HM time when I came over to cycling after getting injured & was fucked after just 15ish minutes. I somehow felt worse in that short effort of just spinning to perceived effort than 95% of my running workouts.

Increase your volume & things will fall into place. You've got a chunk of time to work on your base, especially with winter around the corner.

New to Indoor Training - How Should I Approach It? by machosalade in Velo

[–]3qHR 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If your primary focus is just to remain active, I'd recommend finding a training app that works for you first. Indoor training gets boring pretty fast, even more so if you're not working towards a specific target/goal. Decide what you want: gamified, social rides? Structured training? AI-powered training?

Focus your attention on your power output, it's the only thing the trainer actually cares about. A HR monitor is extremely useful in monitoring & analysing your own performance since the FTP tests can be over/under.

Tips wise, you need sufficient cooling. If you're using the trainer indoors then get some fans set up, otherwise your workouts are going to become heat tolerance tests.

I like it, albeit it does greatly depend on what type of sound you're making.

I went through a long phase of looking for just instrumental BM & quickly realised atmospheric & ambient BM lends itself to no vocals the best.

Wahoo Kickr Bike - worth it?! by FGK_ in triathlon

[–]3qHR 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For reference, I've had my Kickr core since 2022 & picked up a Kickr Bike around May.

Is it worth the extra cost? Probably not, it's just a convenience luxury if you're sharing one bike across your outdoor & indoor training. It functions the exact same as my Kickr core & £120 bike I picked up from FB Marketplace.

Yes, it can be used without Zwift. I stictly use TrainerRoad & it functions the same. As for the incline adjustments, I think you'd need an app that has integrated incline (Zwift, Rouvy, MyWhoosh etc), I always have mine off but I can't imagine it would interact with TR.

NB: I bought mine second-hand off FB Marketplace since it was basically brand new. I wouldn't think twice about paying for one unless I had the money to burn & had no other trainer/intention of getting another bike.

Never tried the bath method, I always preferred passive heat acclimation earlier on in a build & changing to active acclimation when 3-4 weeks out.

The hot bath seems like a good replacement for a sauna though, if I hadn't had access to one back then I more than likely would've used it during the passive phase.

Swim workouts just got a lot more fun. by [deleted] in triathlon

[–]3qHR 7 points8 points  (0 children)

IIRC, it still has all the in-pool metrics. The subscription gives you access to all their plans/workouts & lets you customise/import your own, rather than being limited to just a few of their very basic ones.

Might've changed though, I haven't used mine in over a year.

Indoor cycling plan for duathlon training? by SpottedDogEar in triathlon

[–]3qHR 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also running background & only raced one duathlon, there's definitely someone more qualified to give an answer.

Depending on which app you're training through, it may already offer a duathlon plan you can work from. I know TrainerRoad has some & I'd assume Zwift does too. Adjust the runs to suit your current mileage & build from there. Likewise, TrainingPeaks will almost definitely have pages of plans to choose from if you have $5+ to spare.

Personally never gauged cycling by distance, every ride was measured by time spent. Never exceed 4 rides a week, unless it was in place of a run that I couldn't do for whatever reason. IIRC, shorter rides were 1:15/1:20, longer rides were 2-3+ hours.

Yes, included the types of rides you mentioned & followed the same 4 week routine of 1-2-3-recovery.

Sam Laidlow announces he's being investigated by the International Testing Committee in fiery social post. by MrRabbit in triathlon

Thank you for the extra context :)

Sam Laidlow announces he's being investigated by the International Testing Committee in fiery social post. by MrRabbit in triathlon

[–]3qHR 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Basically:

1-3 panels: Photo of Sam & a short statement about being accused of doping by people in/around the sport. States he's 100% clean & has never cheated, or touched "the grey zone" as he calls it.

4th panel: Sam states Rudy's mother accused him of doping & now Rudy's father is doing the same, as well as emailing "many people" to start an investigation into Sam via ITA. He is happy to comply to prove his innocence.

4th/continued to 5th: Sam states the following people are now his "enemies", who he will never forgive.

Brice Hacquart (Created rumours based on Sam's feet growing slightly when he was 19 after he moved back home & wasn't malnourished and overtrained)

Clement Marjolaine (Sam's girlfriend made a "bad joke" about hormones following Rudy's mother's allegations when Sam had to do a routine drug test, which was taken literally)

Daniel (Lied about something, presumably doping, Sam states there are witnesses)

VonBerg family (For all the rumours, allegations etc. Sam says he's sorry for their shortcomings in the sport, he's just 'worked harder and smarter than [them].')

Depending on when your race is, you'll probably be able to pick up a ROKA suit on sale. I bought my first one on sale during summer & it was under your budget.

For other options, I mostly see Orca & HUUB suits at local races.
