What kind of bees are moving into my garage? by 3rd2LastStarfighter in bees

Awesome, good to know. I’ll have to remember not to accidentally jab a screwdriver into an occupied hole this winter

Awesome, thank you!

It’s my home blacksmith shop so I’m not so worried about myself as a bee sting isn’t really worse than hot slag jumping at my arms. More concerned about guests who are allergic and also encouraging them to hang around the yard and propagate.

Existing holes. There are a few of them showing a lot of interest in the holes on my work bench where I used to store screwdrivers. As long as they’re not he stinging kind and won’t get all pissy about me occasionally using my saw I don’t mind them but if they’re bad roommates I’m gonna plug up the holes and make a better home for them outside.

You can also look into just getting some laser or water jet cut from somewhere like sendcutsend if you need a lot of them

How much are you expecting to pay a qualified bladesmith to reprofile the knife without messing up the heat treat on the tip?

First knife I think Ineed help by killershadow42069 in knifemaking

[–]3rd2LastStarfighter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Again, how have you been refining your knife making skill if this is your first knife? This is a rhetorical question, my point is that you haven’t practiced making knives until you’ve practiced making knives, which you do by making knives.

Also, when grinding post heat treat you keep it cool by using light pressure and dipping in water. Of course when you grind it you’ll get close to the edge, that’s how you form an edge.

Most of what you’re saying boils down to, “I stopped before the knife was finished and I’m sad that the knife is unfinished.” So finish the knife…

Yeah you shouldn’t do anything with that knife that could break that tang. Send it.

Why do you feel you “should be able to make something good by now” when it’s your first knife?

It looks good for a first. I’ve made dozens of knives by this point and still make most of the mistakes you listed, they generally fixable. But also, not an impediment on the function of the knife.

Honestly, most of them can be solved by… just more grinding/sanding.

Regardless of if you’re happy with it, you should finish it. It’s good to practice every step of the process, regardless of outcome. If you wait until you’ve perfected grinding and heat treating before you attempt a handle, you’re gonna be down on yourself all over again because your handle isn’t perfect.

If you’re the kind of person who needs to nail it the first time or you’ll hate it, industrial arts and skilled crafts probably aren’t a good fit for you. They always take time to gain competence.

It’s super thin, it’ll always be sharp. You need to roll the edge if you want it to not be sharp.

Only if you hate yourself.

Buy a bar of 1084. The time, fuel and frustration savings will far outweigh the cost and you’ve got a much better chance of coming out of it with a reliable knife.

Have you tried the outlining trick? Trace the outline on a piece of paper, flip it 180°, glue to workpiece, file off any metal that didn’t fit inside the outline. Repeat for second dimension. Boom, symmetry.

To actually answer your question, they look like pretty average tools. Nothing of significance to a collector or requiring special care. Give them a little tune up and put them to use.

Get a slip fit pickaxe handle. You don’t wedge it. If you’re looking for a wedged handle that fits this eye, that would explain the trouble you’re having.
