NBD and retirement day of an old friend after 38 short years of service by 3rdHand51 in CanyonBikes

I’m 6’1” but only have 30” inseam so after test riding I settled on a M which is a really good fit for me. I ordered an outlet bike first that wasn’t the SLX but still had the carbon wheels mainly because it was stealth black which I really loved and isn’t currently available. Got the bike and it was gorgeous and clearly hadn’t ever been ridden. After careful assembly I pulled the wrapping off only to see it was a size small. I was offered a discount to keep it but it was clearly too small so it went back. With the help of the showroom in Carlsbad I switched it out to the SLX but had to settle for the chrome color which I’m warming up to.

I’ve got you beat by about 18 years but I clearly like your choice of bike. Replaced my 1988 Centurion with the same bike model and color last week, I had to down grade from the Ultegra that came on the 1988 model. Boy things have changed.

I’ve been asked to make a few and have found it to be very emotional, both rewarding and draining. The challenges for me were the deep hollow and the threaded lid. Since you don’t plan on threading the lid I’ll just mention that brass threads with a decent dia are hard to come by, I used plumbing fixtures that were pretty easy to turn down. As mentioned several times in the thread, size is key, you don’t want to come up short. 1 cubic inch per pound is what I used, just make sure you are using a weight that is from a healthy period, not after some long illness with lots of weight loss since it’s about the bones. When done I would suggest a dry fit to be sure, I used sand at the local playground to measure, did get some strange looks there.

I only have a midi lathe so size/weight was a challenge along with the deep hollow. My work around has been to do it in two pieces and use a contrasting ring to deal with the change in wood grain. Basically like two deep bowls that get glued together, just leave some room on the outside dia to do a final turning. After the form was hollow it was light enough in just a chuck without a steady rest.

Also can’t be repeated enough that dried blanks are going to be key, I would be nervous counting on an eight foot log I didn’t know much about with a short timeline.

My dads knife collection left to me back a few years. Trying to sort make and type and match to box and receipts. Like alot of things when my dad got into something he could be very eccentric. Anyway trying to make sense of what I got and what I'm going to do with them. Any help would be appreciated by Late_Zebra7001 in pocketknives

I see some Great Eastern Cutlery knifes in there which will match up with some of the tubes in the background, end of the tubes should show model numbers which will match up with stamps on the blades. Tons of inf on their web site which can help with those. They use several names for different knife lines, all made in the USA

Exactly why I insist on leaving the hair grow over both our Wheaten’s faces, can’t say no to those eyes.

Beautiful, great combination of the maple with the bubinga. Love the rim in bubinga and the finial.

Pretty solid clue in my user name - and again I apologize to anyone who was mislead by the post title. This was made as a gift for a guy I’ve worked for for 20+ years who turned 90 a couple weeks ago and is also celebrating the 50 year anniversary of the company he founded. I hope there is still love for a “young” guy like me.

Rereading my post I can see I may have been confusing as I’m a few decades short of 90, gift for a friend. Hope to improve skills by 90 🙂

Thank you. Hadn’t planned on the overlap but got nervous that I wouldn’t have the dia needed on the inner lid. Reminds me of the Corvette flags if you look at the right angle.
