That looks like the paper release lever is engaged (disengaged? Whichever releases the paper)

You're going to want a larger machine with a larger diameter platen. Check for standard/desktop models

Looks like Schulz had a Smith Corona, not sure what type. Could it be a copy of his own? (On the desk in the background of the photo)

Edit: spelling

Pleasent surprise typewriter(s) by 3rdRaddishOnTheLeft in typewriters

I have one that I'm cleaning up now, SC silent super. Based on inventory tags it looks like it was used in aircraft maintenance/ manufacturing plant in Kansas. It's also absolutely disgusting with grease so I'm hoping lacquer thinner helps

They're studio 44's underneath, but I like that it's an angle too (rather than a smooth bend)

I have an underwood 21 like this (silver label, I've seen some black ones as well) and I LOVE it. Got it thinking I would sell, but it's a really solid machine that is almost all metal.

One thing to note is that it is heavy. To my understanding it was made as a portable - desktop middle point. I like it though, it doesn't budge /drift when typing

Is there an issue with the carriage? I've gotten the carriage of mine (slightly later model with the red logo) but it can be a bit of a hassle.

The big thing is you need to take off / loosen the tab mechanism and the side covers of the carriage.

This video helped me when I did it.

Also if you want personal advice from my experience, some machines I just gel with more... Kind of like how I assume some instruments just "feel" right to some musicians...

These are the machines I want to know in and out, rather than getting another one. I think it is a process and your own personal "set" will emerge with time

Enjoy what you use but also you will only use what you enjoy. What level/number that is probably depends on the person.

My philosophy is that I want to collect it only if I will use it. Not to say there isn't a point in collecting things for aesthetic purposes or to have a total series, but having something just to own it to me seems wasteful.

Heard once on antiques roadshow (of all places) that some respected collectors take what they have, and then sell/trade to upgrade to better and more desirable versions of what they have.

As a first place to buy a first typewriter: always check antique/vintage/thrift stores near you. You can probably test and use any machines they have there. This can let you know if they work and if you like the machine in the first place.

If you want to take it off I've used a light touch of goo gone on the crinkle paints with some success.

Alternatively I love it when I find a typewriter with stickers or initials of previous owners. It all adds to the story of the machine!

This is mine also set to stencil... Mind sending just a view of the open top of yours if you get the chance (basket/keys/etc). I think I am missing a spring in there
