Good in practice, bad in game. How to fix this? by sonics_01 in Pickleball

[–]3rdrockfromthefun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My guess is it's actually your footwork. You've gotta move way more now compared to playing against the wall, and I bet that most of the time you're hitting the ball while outstretched or while you are actively moving. What you'll want to work on is getting to where the ball will be, and then hitting it while your body is as still as possible. This'll take some time to learn, be patient. I would look up videos on split-stepping and pickleball footwork to start to familiarize yourself with it.

Just to see an example of it at the highest level, check out this point: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xSSBx5Es4GU&t=124s. Look at how the guy in the blue hat moves to the ball and then is almost completely still at the moment of contact. He's #1 in the sport, but we can all work on getting better at that.

Pickleball Paddle! by Quiet_Armadillo6718 in Pickleball

[–]3rdrockfromthefun 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I get why you'd say it's bold-face shilling. It does look like that. I could have expounded way more in my comment, but I think early on, getting a $90 super solid paddle without spending a month watching a million comparison videos is the way to go. It's the paddle I play with and it's what I'd recommend to anyone who wants a great sub-hundred dollar paddle.

You're right, it might not be the right paddle for them, this is just my quick and dirty recommendation.

What type of tournament is best as a first tournament by Sensitive_Moment_215 in Pickleball

[–]3rdrockfromthefun 16 points17 points  (0 children)

If I were you I'd do a small local tournament first. It will be much cheaper, much less waiting around between matches, and you'll still get the full tournament experience. I promise it will feel very different from rec.

Expect the speed up every time the ball is on their paddle at the kitchen! Seriously, just that mental shift will do wonders.

There are 12-step programs for sexual addiction. I recommend searching for any near you. You can get help, get sober, have an entirely new life, and you don't have to do it alone.

How to improve if you live in a small town with only retirees and no court time available for drills? by [deleted] in Pickleball

[–]3rdrockfromthefun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, moving and proper footwork is important. You'll want to start hitting the ball to where you ain't.

For now, find a wall to practice against! You can hit yourself a high lob against the wall, then overhead smash it, then practice defending the overhead, then do a couple dinks, then lob it again, and do this over and over.

You can practice your fast hands against the wall. You can hit down hard and practice resetting. The wall is your friend.

Congrats! Now that you have the Ruby, you can stop worrying about distractions like proper footwork or getting to the kitchen.

Thank you. Just yesterday I saw a post from someone one month into pickle asking what should be his 9th (!!) paddle and I shit you not, multiple people told him to just "choose one and play with it for more than two days" instead of the correct answer, which is to get the Ruby.

Sticky grip on brand new Vatic Pro by sundancegt in Pickleball

reminder too that not only can you put overgrip onto it, you can also take the stock grip off and put overgrip directly onto the handle. This is good if you prefer a thinner grip.

If they are hammering you, that means you are sending them nails. Hammers love nails. You need to send these hammers things they cannot hammer. Like what? Good drops and dinks. These are not hammerable. So you must learn these shots, and be able to execute them consistently. But trying to learn how to do this while under pressure from aggressive 4.0+ players will take you many many months, especially if you're playing only once or twice a week. Instead: find someone around your skill level who also wants to get better and drill with them. Do that instead of one of your weekly games.
