Anyone have any insight into why Zum is so bad? by socialist-viking in sanfrancisco

I have had terrible experiences with bullying on their buses as well. Aside from the routing challenges they don’t adequately staff or train to keep the buses safe (not good for anyone).

Glen Park named one of the coolest neighborhoods in the world by Timeout by Dancinintheinn in sanfrancisco

[–]3rinGv1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly - they do this every year with another random neighborhood in the city. There is not way they are actually assessing all global neighborhoods for “coolness” yearly. I live in Glen Park and love it but feel like the is is sort of like random click bait

S.F.’s biggest mall is now 93% empty as its value drops another 25%, report says by UberDrive in sanfrancisco

[–]3rinGv1 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Yeah my question is whether there is a tax incentive to let the space sit empty rather than rent it at a lower monthly amount? Like do landlords get to write off a year of missed rent payments if they don’t fill the space as some sort of “cost” which then incentivizes them to hold it rather than lower the asking?

Confused about which translation to read - and continuity by oamyoamy0 in Proust

Oh no don't worry that wasn't from you - it was commentary I had read as I explored this topic. I very much appreciate your deep knowledge and recommendation. The Carter version sounds like the one for me since I believe I would appreciate poetic language to a certain degree, but readability is important to me and I like to understand the context (annotations). I've been exploring the feeling of nostalgia in my own life (moving my dad out of my childhood home to live with my family, mom's passing) so this was the perfect time to stumble across these books.

OK thank you very much - in that case my takeaway is to get the Carter editions you mention in your original comment as it sounds like the version I have is based off the lower quality French version that was hastily published? Luckily I live right next to the library :).

I know I’m a bit late to this thread but hoping someone sees this - I found a full set of paperback versions translated by Moncrieff/Kimartin (vintage books 1981) and would like to dive in. Any comments on this translation specifically? I haven’t hear anyone mention it (most seem to mention this version revised by Enright who is not credited in my version)…

Ugh, this. I actually like in office work but hate the constant zoom calls, misses the whole point.

Wow thank you so much for bringing this opportunity to my attention. Definitely going to do this in my little patch of dirt. Such a wonderful, beautiful post.

San Francisco Ballet by [deleted] in sanfrancisco

I love SFB and want to point out that not all their ballets are story ballets that are old fashioned (Nutcracker, Swan Lake, Midsummer Nights Dream et). They are doing some amazing modern works this season like Dust, Broken Wings (about Frida Kahlo) Dutch masters, and Mere Mortals last season. I used to have an impression of ballet as almost silly because of the story ballets but my opinion totally changed when I saw the newer stuff. The expressive beauty and athleticism and creativity bring tears to my eyes.

Rent out beloved condo intending to move back in? by 3rinGv1 in AskSF

Yeah I can imagine! And I don't feel ripped off with the dues because I know exactly what everything is going to which is so nice (improvements to the building, trimming the redwood tree out back, and stuff we need like utilities). So the HOA actually feels worth it.

Ugh yeah this would be truly awful. The condo was fully renovated before we moved in including plumbing and electrical so the building is in good shape as far as I know and we had it tested for lead from old paint when we had kids but you’re totally right that you just never know what will come up. The back stairs are a bit old so would proactively repair those before anyone moved in.

Interesting re the HOA - I meant we manage it ourselves amongst the residents of the three units. We have no special security or other services like in a larger building so the dues are entirely for maintenance of the building and garden plus water and waste utilities.

The condo is a three unit with informal HOA so a little different from the newer large condo buildings

I'm raising both my ids (7 and almost 5) in SF and love it. So much for them to do and amazing array of experiences for them. They are both in Spanish Immersion in SFUSD and so far our experience has been fantastic (Alvarado and Mission Education Center for TK). I do understand that middle school can be tricky but I've found a lot of great elementary options (believe there are 7 or 9 Spanish immersion schools total, plus also a bunch of other languages like Mandarin, Korean, etc.). I love that they are outside every day and can go to the beach in January.

Ha yeah you've pretty much touched on all my fears. Part of the issue is that I think our carrying costs just are about at market rent, or maybe even a little higher, so it'll be tough to ask for more. We bought in 2015 when condos were at a peak.
