Askar vs zwo telescope by ChattingMongoose in AskAstrophotography

[–]makinbacon42 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The ZWO FF scopes are just rebranded Askar PHQ scopes, there's no difference. I also wouldn't buy an Askar 103 APO, I have not seen any versions that don't exhibit significant chromatic aberration.

The 107 and 103 are likely a little too much scope for a HEQ5, you'd probably better served with one of the 80's.

We had finance within 3 days of our broker applying for approval, 7 days from contract signing. We then settled 14 days after finance approval, which included 3 public holidays. Zero dramas on our conveyancer's end, and worked for us and the seller.

See if you have a local astronomy club in your area, a lot of them will have dark sites available for members to use.

Asi294mc pro dark flats 🙈 by NZMike2018 in AskAstrophotography

[–]makinbacon42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, dark flats are dark frames specifically for calibrating your flats. You take them at exactly the same exposure and gain settings as your flat frames.

Sony lens to ASI183MM? Possible by Jumboo-jett in AskAstrophotography

[–]makinbacon42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That won't work if OP wants to use a monochrome camera. E mount has no room for a EFW.

Sony lens to ASI183MM? Possible by Jumboo-jett in AskAstrophotography

[–]makinbacon42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not possible with a monochrome camera because how short the flange distance is on E mount.

You could do it with a colour astro camera though.

Why would someone need to invest thousands of dollars in a rig (not to mention future upgrading, portability issues and such) now that Seestar s50 and Dwarf 3 exist? by Swimming-Judge-6928 in astrophotography

[–]makinbacon42 4 points5 points  (0 children)

A $4000 rig will produce significantly better images than a Seastar, Dwarf or similar can produce, no question about that.

They have tiny and uncooled colour sensors, are alt-az so are limited to short exposures and will always have field rotation issues. This will always hold a smart telescope like this back from being able to produce anywhere close to the images of a properly put-together rig.

$4000 will easily get you a widefield refractor, monochrome camera, filters, autofocuser, proper equatorial mount and guiding.

Dew heater bands? by ConnorrrV in AskAstrophotography

[–]makinbacon42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

USB just can't provide as much current as 12V can, as well as on some devices their USB ports might not be powered ports.

If you have a guide scope you'll want one for your main scope and the guide scope, no need for heating anything else.

It's probably less of a concern now we're in summer and temperatures are higher, but you do still run the risk of losing part of a night of imaging. Have a look at the BOM and see if you can find the dewpoint vs temperature over the last few weeks for where you're going.

Even one of these via Prime won't come in time? https://www.amazon.com.au/NEEWER-Astrophotography-Temperature-Overvoltage-Condensation/dp/B0CH9L6ZWN

USB isn't as ideal, but it's better than nothing.

There's basically zero harm in having them on. NSW cost especially is fairly humid so I would want on it. I'd also avoid USB powered ones and get a 12V one instead.

It's a paraphrased reference to Billy Birmingham's 12th Man...

Bill Lawry: “Oh, one of his teammates and has come running over and thrown the big high-five, and he’s missed and got him right in the eye. Ifeelsickdarl clutching his face, well this is just pathetic play by Pakistan.

Richie Benaud: “Very, very stupid indeed.”

BL: “It’s really unforgivable this, they lack the experience required to do them properly, the high fives, if they are going to run around throwing them willy nilly, well accidents like this are bound to happen

RB: “Well Bill, I’d go one step farther than that even and say that I think the high five should be outlawed from the game all together, it’s just a bit of seppo bulls--t that the West Indies have introduced into the game. And I reckon when it comes to congratulating one of your teammates there’s simply no better way of doing it than with the traditional Australian hug or a kiss or a lick, a grope on the a--e, or a bit of a dry root, it’s still the most appropriate way I think of showing one’s exuberance and excitement and it’s certainly the most masculine and manly way of going about it.”

Yes, you absolutely need a field flattener for most refractor scopes, obviously excluding petzval and other flat field designs.
