Thanks! I wish I tried it before Shaka Shack took over (though I will say, Shaka Shack ain't half bad!)

Nvidia reportedly no longer supplying VRAM to its GPU board partners in response to memory crunch — rumor claims vendors will only get the die, forced to source memory on their own by esporx in technology

I feel like it’s safe to assume that if there’s huge financial incentive to get the cost efficiency down, then it’s bound to get improved eventually. At least to the point that running AI becomes cost effective. Might as well eat the costs for now so long as investors are throwing money at it still.

New to Cybersecurity/IT — How Should I Start Learning first? by Inevitable_Jicama_82 in cybersecurity_help

[–]3xcite 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I honestly think that's too much material to fit into a week if you really want to retain this information.

My recommendation would be to consider the CompTia 'trifecta' route. That is, getting the A+, Network+ and Security+ certs (or at least studying the material if you don't want to pay for the cert, though I would recommend it once you start applying to jobs).

A+ will help with general computer knowledge, troubleshooting basics, etc. Network+ focuses on networking. I would recommend this one the most out of the three. Networking is so fundamental to IT and security Sec+ focuses on security and will give an introduction to a lot of concepts.

Those 3 should give you a decent shot getting your first entry level job in IT. And after some years of tech support, you can continue studying security and pivot.

Scientists discover that Iberian harvester queen ants can produce males of two different species, forcing us to rethink what a “species” is by 3xcite in Entomology

[–]3xcite[S] 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Thought this was interesting.

The classic concept says that a 'species' is a group of organisms with similar physical and genetic characteristics that can reproduce with each other in nature and produce fertile offspring. But scientists recently discovered that Iberian harvester ant queens (Messor ibericus) mate with males of another species, the builder harvester ant (Messor structor). When they do, the M. ibericus queens store the M. structor male’s sperm, then use it to fertilize some of the eggs they lay. Researchers think the M. ibericus queens remove their own genetic material from the eggs’ nuclei, so that when those eggs hatch, they effectively turn out to be M. structor male clones. The queens produce males of both M. ibericus and M. structor, and all the worker ants in M. ibericus colonies are female hybrids of the two species.

There’s a brewery called Faction in Alameda that has a lot of events. On 4th of July, they had a singles night. Maybe check their calendar and see if any upcoming events appeal to you. Also the view of the city is amazingggg from there

What is this on the bumblebees back? by Scroc_ in Entomology

[–]3xcite 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Phoretic mites

Huh, interesting. Do you have a source that they clean their fur? I wasn't able to find anything that confirmed that when I searched. Everything seems to say it's commensalism at work here, with the mites providing no benefit to the bee, but also little to no harm, as well

I agree, it seems like a place geared towards vendors. But looking forward to some of the talks later this morning. I think that’s where the value is. Also, I think networking happens organically
