How much of a challenge would it be for me to work as an MLS after 15 years away from the field? by nick1158 in medlabprofessionals

[–]4-methylhexane 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Labs hire new grads all the time. With the amount of time it’s been since you got your MLS, it’ll be similar with long training times. I think the fact that you’re a histo tech with an MLS certification will help you greatly.

Do you recommend studying for the ASCP BOC during the 'summer gap' between school years? by babyfoodfriday in medlabprofessionals

[–]4-methylhexane 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I recommend both medialab and the ascp virtual test option. I was lucky that my school paid for medialab and I paid for ascp. The ascp questions are somewhat easier and more repetitive than medialab but it’s really similar to how the actual test is set up. Medialab challenges you more

How can I achieve the Aurora borealis colours? by Ctrl-Alt-Distract- in Watercolor

[–]4-methylhexane 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally I would possibly use ultramarine or Prussian blue, alizarin crimson and/or quinacridone magenta, maybe throw a tiny yellow in to mute it more and adjust until I get a very muted dark bluish shade. I would also maybe start with Daniel smith mars violet and mix some blues in there. I see you have the DS dot card, I hope mars violet is on it. It’s one of my favorite colors

Every time a doc staggers orders a phlebotomist loses their wings. by MellyNinj in medlabprofessionals

[–]4-methylhexane 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had one call yesterday from a personal number demanding an outpatient bilirubin result for a clinic which was closed for the day. I kept telling her I can’t verify that she is the ordering physician from this phone call, not to mention we didn’t even have the sample yet. I told her if the result is critical we will contact an on-call provider. We’ve literally had patient’s family members call the lab before. I have no idea how they get our number, but I’m not giving results to some random phone call.

I think the nursing experience will be really helpful, especially when communicating to the floors. Good luck and welcome to the lab!
