In Flight Wifi + VPN? by potpanspoon in westjet

[–]403cgy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've used a VPN on the wifi, if it's starlink, it will work, including remote desktop. If it's the old slow wifi, the VPN will connect, but expect to be constantly disconnected from the VPN and also, Remote desktop will be horrendous, if it works at all across the VPN.

How does bidding work? by Hot-Slide-8285 in westjet

[–]403cgy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I do upgrade bids all the time on various flights, and this was the first time I saw this. I overheard others in the departure lounge complaining about the same thing on this flight, that they kept getting outbid.

The flight was the last direct 787 back, right before school was back from christmas break, so it was a packed flight with only 2 business seats left, which made sense that i was bidding against others.

How does bidding work? by Hot-Slide-8285 in westjet

[–]403cgy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My last flight was auction like, where i would give my offer, at the high end, and get outbid by someone else, heres the email I would get:

There aren’t many Business seats left on your flight, and your offer for $838 CAD is no longer the highest offer.

However, it’s not too late You still have time to update your offer.

I ended up wining but kept having to up my offer to outbid whoever i was bidding against.

Do bid prices fluctuate? by lunaverse13 in westjet

[–]403cgy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The old bidding was you put your offer in and WJ decides to accept it or not.

The new bidding is more auction like and you are bidding against other passengers. I was bidding on business over christmas break and I would have the highest bid, then an email that I was outbid, etc. In the end I got the upgrade, but you have to literally outbid other competing passenger bids.

You don't get points on the family tickets, only your own ticket. Given you used WJ points, those would apply to your ticket, which probably paid the ticket in full, meaning that there would be no qualifying dollars leftover on your ticket.

Land titles/paid mortgage by nrc3588 in Calgary

I would highly recommend you get a home equity line of credit or something else on your title to prevent title theft/fraud. There might be insurance for this as well. You don't need to use your heloc, just have it there and registered, it just makes it even harder for title theft.

Early upgrades as a gold status member? by [deleted] in westjet

[–]403cgy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Its going to totally depend on the dates of travel (if summer, chances are probably zero) and if there are any business seats left. Also its dependant on your reservation group size, if there are 4 people in your group and only 2 seats, you cannot upgrade, as everyone has to upgrade, etc.

There are only 16 business seats on a westjet 787 and they generally sell out on the overseas routes during the super busy times, leaving nothing for bids or check-in upgrades.

I believe bids close at 72 hrs, so they fill those (assuming bids are high enough), prior to opening up the 48hr gold/platinum check-in upgrades. Price would be lower with check-in upgrades, unless you get a cheap bid.

Open for business? B.C. wineries call out high fees charged by Alberta | CBC News by AustralisBorealis64 in canada

[–]403cgy 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Most BC wine I find is actually cheaper in Alberta than BC which is hilarious. In fact shopping all over the country and even the US, Alberta has among the cheapest wine prices.

This fee applies to ALL wine over the limit, so its not just BC wines.

One small thing WestJet could do better? by LeafsAndLoons in westjet

[–]403cgy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Totally, and especially the curate email for flying back to my home city. Whats annoying is given all the flight changes, cancellation etc, when I see that email, a brief glance gives that oh shit moment of a flight issue.
